View Full Version : Just a little panicked!
To the point. I've had a big male bumblebee, a female bumblebee and a peacock in quarintine... probably over a month. The male BB has eye cloud. It's getting better. The peacock was just beat up... she was getting better so I put her back into the tank (may have been a mistake... I'll see what she looks like tomorrow.
NOW... the female BB's symptoms were tattered looking skin, small white patches of some type of fungus on her fins. She had small blood blister looking spots on the base of each pectorial fin. She appeared to have some irritation or swollenness in her mouth.
I've been using LOTS of melafix and Pimafix...(double dosing).
Tonight when i came home, I found BILLIONS of little tiny white worm looking things all over the glass! They're so small you can barely see them, but they scoot along pretty quickly. WORMS!
I have no clue where they came from because I didn't notice them until tonight. So I decided to start treating them also with salt (cichlid salt)...
What are those worms.... and how do I get rid of them (already did a 95% water change...)...
I'm a tad worried now... the female bb is getting worse it seems and she's been getting treated for WELL over a month...:help:

I have never heard of worms in a tank and have no idea but you (and others) are scaring me from keeping my 90 gal tank! I had no idea tanks could be so complicated! Good luck. I will follow your thread for learning purposes!

Ahh... but it's so much fun resolving problems! Someone will have an answer. It's all part of the hobby... hehe thumbs2:
Oh, and learning is why we're ALL here...

Sounds to me like you have a case of planaria.
Even though Planaria do not harm fish, they are an indicator that the aquarium has a problem. They require a food source, which means there must be excess food wastes in the tank to support them.
You need to thoroughly clean the tank making sure to gravel vac every inch of substrate. You need to reduce the amount you are feeding also as planaria feed off waste food.
They do not harm fish but will feed off fish eggs too.

Should be an easy fix... it's my quarentine tank. I need to clean it more often. Maybe that's not why my fish are healing!!! I thought I was cleaning it adequately. Man, there were a BILLION of them. I wiped down the sides and bottom of the tank (no substrate) and did a 95% WC.....
I'll just keep doing that until those buggers are gone!
Thanks:22:

CF has it on the head. Less food, more water changes.

Your welcome Mith.
I have never knowingly had planaria.
I know it can freak you out to see something like that and not know what it is.
Just up your maintenance and they will soon be gone. :ssmile:

I've got it in my RCS tank but not to that degree. Just a worm once in a a while. Mine are larger though. Flatworms, harmless.

Thanks people! I'll keep that tank cleaner. Solve all my problems!

Regrettably, I have not had success with Pima/Melafix against these sorts of issues. I will say that I think Melafix will help the healing process, but that's about it.
Cloudy eye and/or fin rot can be caused by injury, fungus, bacteria, parasites, but most often due to poor water quality.
The recommended treatment is clean water, water changes at 50%/day. Salt may be added at 1 to 2 tablespoons/10 gallons aquarium water. If the eye does not clear or becomes worse, Acriflavine or Methylene blue sometimes helps.
If the symptoms are getting worse, you may want to use a good broad spectrum antibiotic such as Furan-2 that contains Nitrofurazone & Furazolidone.
As for the worm-like inhabitants on your tank walls. I do agree that they are most likely Planaria, which are flat non-parasitic flat worms and are a sign of over feeding. They most visibly appear on smooth survices like your glass walls, but will also accumulate inside your filter on any smooth service. Be sure to wipe down these areas regularly. Once infested, it can be difficult to get rid of them with just water changes, a reduction in food quantity, or cleaning up uneaten food.
If the issue persists, you may want to consider FM&G (QuickCure) or potassium permanganate to disinfect your tank. PP would be a last resort, but I've used it with great results for external parasitic issues.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Rolmao....not at all, I'm honored! Unlike some, I don't believe a thread can be hijacked....if a thread isn't interesting enough to hold its own...it SHOULD be hijacked LOL.
Congratulations on 1000!!!! Keep up the good work hehe

Any chance of an update on how your fish are progressing? Fingers crossed!

Well I believe the worms are gone. I took out about 90% of the water then wiped down the glass with a paper towel. I did that about three times. They seem to be gone (last time I looked) and I'm paying much more attention to how much food I drop into that tank as well as keeping it clean. Doing the same for my baby tank too I might add.
The male BB is SLOOOOOWLY improving, but the female BB is still in poor shape.
The female peacock had to be put down. I thought I'd give her one more thance in the big tank, but they slaughtered her.
I had to put down one of my blue fish. It was all but dead because of bullying I'm pretty sure. She was swimming (in squarentine) upside down and what-not. Been a bumpy road lately...
Good news, the community tanks's fine... LOL
