View Full Version : Of Walmart and Fishies...
I shouldn't have looked...but I did...so it's a done deal...
We have a HUGE new Walmart that opened recently. A coworker was raving about the fish section...clean...nice selection...so we went to look...
...and I came home with 2 baby goldies...a black moor and a lionhead/ranchu...
They're in the 10g with the others...I'll do more water changes if I have to, before I can add them all to the 55g...
Sorry for the crappy pics...between the bad light in the basement and my 'basic' camera, I'm kinda stuck...

The large calico is a run-of-the-mill fantail...the medium gold coloured might be an oranda...his head looks like it's swelling...and I think you can make out the dojo too.
I was right about the moor disappearing into the background...
...oh yeah...bought another female betta...to replace one of the original 3 that died a couple of weeks ago...but not at Walmart...

Both of the WalMarts in my area got rid of their fish sections and only sell accessories and food:19:

nice fish,
I have to say that i was absolutely amazed the other day when i went to my ghetto Wallmart, and saw the fish selection. ( There are two by me. A super and an old run down one. )
The display was cleaner and nicer looking than my local petsmart. I was shocked. The fish were correctly labeled and they did not have any fish housed together that shouldn't be housed together.
Compared to the newer super Wallmart which is dirty and disgusting i was impressed with this store. . That one is dirty and disgusting.
Heck, It was almost nicer than my LFS, but it doesn't have the selection or customer service that that one has.
Granted, I doubt I will ever buy from Wallmart, but it was nice to see a well kept fish section at the one.
Sorry to side track. Hope you enjoy your new fish.
I hadn't intended on supporting Walmart pet sales either...never bought fish there before...
...but I've been looking for a calico ranchu for a while (months!) and this was the first nice-ish one I've seen. It's a lionhead...but has a nice rounded back...and I'm not a purist...so I don't mind...
The moors have been awful at the LFS lately...elongated, very bronze...not healthy looking...they need to talk to their distributor...
...so I took a moor as well...not the nicest I've ever seen...but does have a cute compact body and very nice tail/eyes...I could have waited...but well...I was there...
You know what it's like...

Nice goldfish! Is that a shubunkin in the back?
No...
...the large calico is a 4-5 year old fantail...
...the orange one is a 1 year old fantail...but might be oranda (somethings happening to his head!)
...the little calico is a lionhead
...and the little black one is the black moor...
Took my parrot for her first outing of the year...it was very nice and warm outside today...
...took her to the LFS (they know me by sight)...and returned gravel I didn't need...and bought:
API Master Test Kit
AquaClear 110 Bio Medium for one Emperor 280
AquaClear 110 Sponge for the other Emperor 280
No name filters and sponge for the little cheap 10g filter
Cycle
Aquarium salt...gonna salt the goldies...they seem to do better...
Still need a new background...don't know what to do now...stay with the black and NEVER see the black moor again...or go with regular 'underwater' print???
And I still need light(s) for the 55g...

all of my wal-marts ditched fish with the dopiest excuse.
Theyre adding to the building for a produce section, and the fish tanks are 5 aisles and the greenhouse away from construction, and they had a sign saying no more fish due to construction. Kind of fishy that most wal-marts are ditching their fish right when they put up the sign
I've boughten several fish from our local Wally World, I bought a dozen Malawi's there and have kept them for 2 years with only ever losing one because of having to move.
I bought 10 Zebra Danio's there about a month ago and all are still alive and thriving, the same weekend I bought 10 Head and Tail Light Tetras from a local pet store, all died within one week. I got my money back, went back over to Wal Mart and bought 8 Platies, all of which are doing fantastic.
Out of all the fish I have ever boughten at Wal Mart over the years I have only ever lost one, and that was 1.5 years after I bought him.
Also, the fish at Wal Mart only cost about 1/4 of what they cost at most pet stores around here.

My Walmart used to be horrible and now has nice tanks and a good stock. I see nothing wrong from buying from a store that has good looking, healthy fish. Buying from any store than has dead, floating fish is most wise. I hear the same thing about PetSmart but the PetSmart closest to me (an hour) has great tanks and lots of them. All very, very clean and not a dead fish to be found.

I think it just depends on the people at each store. The worst conditions I have ever seen for any living creature at all were at a "Mom & Pop" LFS. While theres a Petco in my city that asks so many questions when you want to buy anything that my wife and I call them the "Fish Nazis". You're gonna need a 90 gallon tank for that neon - etc. They are even aware of the steps to completeting a Nitrogen cycle.
If anyone has Junes edition of Aquarium Fish International, there is brief note stating that many Wal Marts in the US are getting rid of their fish tanks but will be continuing to sell aquarium sales.
They say the reason is that the trend for aquariums has slowed down, now that Disney's Finding Nemo is no longer in people's minds.
Oh well, I just hope that our local Wal Mart continues to sell them.

I read that. My wal-mart was just getting the produce attachment built, and they conveniently put thats why theyre getting rid of fish. They did get rid of them, and now its just shelves of dog stuff. Small town wal-marts here still have fish though

Somehow in Germany and the USA this discussion is exactly the same, just change the name from "Wallmart" to "Obi", "Knauber", Bauhaus"
The rest of the story is absolutely similar.
Some of those shops are the sheer horror, others kept very good. And really, why shouldnt I buy my fish in a well kept "Obi" animal department?

When did Obi and Bauhaus get fish? Never seen that. Is the Wal Mart on the A59 by Dreieck Heumar still there?

Depends on the shop, some have, most dont.
Wallmart at Heumarer Dreieck, I guess it now has another name, cause the american Wallmart we had here in germany didnt run too well, so it was baught by another very big Chain called Metro.
The Germans didnt like the US Wallmart concept.
Near Hamburg is a big Obi with a very big fish department, oh yeah this would be a perfect example for: Dont buy anything alive in there. I ve been in this shop a few times, I guess the fish there only SEE the food, but dont get it.

That's right, Wal Mart pulled out last year and Metro placed the bid on their stores, changing some into Metro and some into Real. I forgot about that.

Man next time my answers to your posts will be in German:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: (but I dont think that the other folk would like it:hmm3grin2orange: )
Or LTU and Air Berlin now ... :hmm3grin2orange:
I lived/worked there for the last 10 years or so.

Our Walmart only has a nice cleaned up fish area when they get their shipment in. I've taken to going and buying walmart fishies to save them now, lol. I don't like supporting them not taking care of their fish by buying them, but I just feel so bad that they aren't being taken care of. My bf has a koi pond and bought a koi and a fantail koi from there that was maybe 3 inches long last year and now they are both healthy and about 7-8 inches long:18: My crowntail betta was a walmart rescue too.
