View Full Version : I Caught 'Em (those "darn" zebra danios!)

Today was a BAD fish day for us. One of our mbuna died and I came home to find another not well (any mbuna experts, if you have time to look and insight to share: [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] )...

HOWEVER, I am pleased with one fish issue. I captured all my "darn" zebra danios and moved them from the tank they were in to where I want them (please let that be so for now on). I've moved them a few times in the past, and it's not fun. I tried to move them the other day and just lost my patience and vowed to try again another day... That day was today.

For anyone who's got to catch the same kind of "futher muckers", I've had luck before coming up from under them with the net. Not so today, though. I got 3 off the bat that way, but couldn't get any others the same way. I tried using the divider I bought specifically to help me catch difficult fish and that was a bust.

Then I got a clean plastic pitcher (the one I use to refill tanks from evaporation or when I didn't top them off enough) and chased them into it. That worked SO well. In case this could help anyone else catch those hard to catch fishies!!!

ALSO, on one more happy fish note, the wooden cabinet stands I ordered for our 2 new 55g tanks also came today, just now. If only my mbuna issue will straighten out and be okay...

I had a dead albino yellow top zebra this morning (very unexectedly -- I literally gasped when I saw) and this evening, a lathargic, laying on his side yellow lab. I have him in a QT now and he's actually acting good now. I don't know what's wrong. My parameters are all the lowest read / color you can get on the API liquid tests for Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia. :( Now I wonder if I've been over feeding them, or doing too much pwc's (since I'm such an addict...).

Congrats on the "catchin"

I noticed they seem just curious enough to swim into my siphon so I was planning that type of attack when I change substrate. Good ideas though!!

I love zebra danios, nothing is wrong with the fish, thats just how they are. If they arent right for you, then they arent. You should give them back/away if you dont like them though..that goes against the whole point of the hobby

Anyone who can come catch them now in the tank they're in can have them (no, maybe not... that would stress the other fish)!

I don't "hate" them, but I do hate moving them. Where they are now should work fine long term. However, I wouldn't go out and buy more when these pass on. They're not a favorite type of fish to me... But, they sure are hardy. I haven't lost one yet and they have been in 4 different tanks. At this point, I should be a pro at "zebra wrangling!"

Congrats on catching them. I find moving fish to be just a little stressful - for them and for me. Fortunately the longer I am in the hobby the better I get at it... as I am sure you are doing too.

I had danios once. When I finally caught them, I haven't and most likely will never buy another one.

The kids all line up around the tanks to watch me try to catch Zebras, neons, and rummynoses. They think it's the funniest thing in the world. I have dividers, multiple nets... whole nine yards while standing on a step stool...
Good work Jill!

Funny I want to change the gravel in one of my tanks but I have not worked up the energy to try and catch the celebes rainbows yet.

when it comes to catching fish I try to wait untill I do water changes but I normally only have to catch 1 holding mbuna at a time after I remove about 100 lbs of rock

Hate zebra danios, personally. I just can't deal with their speed. They aren't coming out of the tank they're in until they die! >.<

Sigh. Such contrast to my female goldies. Anytime I put my hand in the tank they try to swim -into- it, and I have even had them stay there calmly when I moved them from one tank to another (Net broke that day, didn't have a container big enough to fit them, but small enough to get in the tank.)
