Do you have any pictures of its underside or mouth? That can help a lot in identifying. Any close-ups of its head would probably help too.

I'm not an expert, but from just the top view, I'd say some kind of catfish. Or did you know that already? (blush)

I was thinking a catfish too, but it's hard to say without seeing it's face and underbelly.

Does it eat whatever is in the tank with it?
Can you get a side and front shot of it please?
That tank really needs some water in it!
Is it filtered at all?

Sorry, those are the only pictures I have. My parents got it and these are the only pictures they sent me. You can enlarge the pictures to get a better view of the head, and one of the pictures has a reflection that shows the underside of the mouth.

I actually have no clue what fish this is. It doesn't seem to have any barbels, so I don't know if it's a catfish. Plus apparently it eats feeder fish and is really aggressive, do catfish do that?

Yes! Some are quite vicious!
How come its only in a few inches of water?

I think my parents took the picture just after they got back with it. I'm pretty sure they've topped off the tank by now.

I cannot give you an ID on the fish but I can tell you two things.
Watch your fingers,It looks like a bad ass fish.
It needs a huge tank.
That fish looks like its longer than the tank is deep.(front to back)
I hope that is just a transport tank.I don't think its finished growing.

Hopefully someone else will be on soon that can positivly ID it for you.

Agree with Rich if I had to guess. Doesn't look like a catfish at all to me.

It looks most like a saltwater sculpin to me. Overall boday shape, headshape and position of pectoral fins are what's clueing me onto this. There are tons of saltwater sculpins, so I can't give you a species name. But even if you've seen freshwater sculpin you'll see what I'm talking about.

Not even close to a catfish. Haha.
Not Hoplias because they only have one dorsal. This fish has two. Overall body and head shape don't match up.

I withdraw my previous statement.
After looking at the mouth shape, something was off. - Not a sculpin but a

Marble Goby Oxyeleotris marmorata

Look and see if that fits with anyone else. Looks dead on to me.

Agreed. I was too quick to judge... it's not a wolffish.

Great! Thanks a bunch to UncleWillie and everyone else. This does appear to be a Marble Goby, or Oxyeleotris marmorata, family Eleotridae.

I did a few searches and as UncleWillie said, the Marble Goby has 2 dorsal fins, a upturned mouth with a protruding lower jaw, and eyes that are more dorsally situated. The wolf fish has one dorsal fin, a down-turned mouth, and eyes on the sides of their heads.

Here are some pictures I found on the web, which match up pretty well with the ones I got from my parents.

The body and head shape screams Goby , but I'm not an expert on them so I couldn't tell you which one.

Edit: looks like I'm a little late on this, guess I should start reading the threads all the way through before I post(blush) . At least I was right about the goby part:19: .
