What a cool filter. Checks temps ( sounds an alarm when temp is off), tells you when your last filter cleaning was, etc. Neat.

$500 for 265gph? Keep your bells and whistles I say!!! Hopefully the fx5s come down in price.

I agree with Crispy. It's a high price tag for more bells and whistles. I'm still a fan of the Eheim 2180, but we'll see how this model reviews fair in time.

Looks great though!

I didn't say it was cheap. I said it was cool.

...seems like the 'lazy-mans' filter. You think your filters are loud now? wait till they start alarming and beeping at you! :hmm3grin2orange:

It looks like a nice device. Over engineering at its best.

It seems like they are trying to top Eheim. What ticked me off was when Eheim claimed their filters could go months without cleaning. I guess if the waste breaks down and the filter becomes a nitrate factory you don't have to remove that debris monthly. That was really a lazy man's filter.

Hagen is also not being very friendly to the stores about this one. We have to do a huge buy in just to get it (so many of the big one, so many of the little one, and all the media). It comes out to $6,000 or so just to bring them in to the store. And yet I can buy them on drsfostersmith for about or maybe even slightly less than what I would have to pay hagen directly to get them. That is after Hagen decides I am good enough to carry them. I would have to be pre-approved by a regional manager in person or something. And considering neither is as big as the FX5, I will keep using the FX5 for now.

That explains a lot as to availability. We have over 15 pet stores in my surrounding area and I would be hard pressed to find either Eheim or FX models in any of them except for That Fish Place.

From the end user's perspective though, I've found more positive reviews about the Eheim 2080/2180 when compared to the FX5 and when ready to buy would find the most competitive price via internet or LFS.

Agreed fishguy, I am good friends with a LFS owner, and you need certain amount of tanks etc to keep this thing. There really going to shoot themselves in the foot, and crash. Now lets all hope the fx5 goes down in price.

Thats quite the filter!
I'll bet its listed at $999.99 up here! lol
My lfs will not order any Hikari foods because of the amount that they have to order.
I tried to get her to stop selling Wardleys and stock the Hikari but she is worried nobody will buy it!I drive 2 1/2hrs to get mine and find them sold out most of the time.

Northern guy.. just call em! lol.

IMO a filter that checks temp is a sign that they are running out of ideas lol...If I'm mistaken and it has an internal heater or something, that'd be cool.

fx5 may come down in price slightly with time

Totally different market, but look at xbox360, and ps3, a few years ago they were close to $500 (if not over), now I believe you can get them for around two or three hundred.

I can only hope it'll go the same way with canister filters, I'm glad my 125 was already set up with overflow and returns, and I had a spare tank for a sump, otherwise I'd of had to shell out big bucks for filtration... yuck.

That's nuts. If she'd stop carrying Walmart fishfood and get the better stuff, she'd sell the better stuff!

The store in my town stopped carrying all the Maracyn medications. Leaves me with nothing but Jungle Labs drop in pellets but fortunately most of them do a good job. But.... I don't like not having the option of CHOICE! It's like buying groceries and the only vegetable to pick from is peas!

One of our suppliers was trying to get me to buy some of these things last week, as I hate Fluval I will never be able to validate paying more than $200 for one...even if it shot out a print out every day about my water parms. And LFS cost on this one is honestly no different that its marked there...in this economy its not really the time or place to be being so picky with who buys your new gadget...or packing such a price tag on low performance. Plenty of other sub 300GPH canisters out there that operate very efficiently for 1/4 of the cost.

you know for that much money, I'll check your temps twice a day and yell at you if they are off.

I'll gladly take 2x FX5s for that pricetag.
