View Full Version : just did a major clean
Man, that took forever! I cleaned my 125g cichlid tank...and when I say clean, I mean I removed ALL the rocks and driftwood! I vacuumed all the gravel and cleaned the filter.
I ALSO removed a holding female bumblebee. Her mouth is HUGE! I done know what stage the egg/babies in her mouth are, but she has her own tank to spit at her own pace with nobody to bother her. Hopefully I'm able to raise the babies successfully so I can throw them back into the 125.
So that was MY day. Tomorrow I move the money pit out of my house forever.....but that's another story! LOL

Be sure you have lots of little hiding spots for the fry so momma don't eat them.
I feel your pain on the 125. One of the reasons I tried to keep the decor in mine relatively simple.

Sounds like it's time to sit back and have a beer and enjoy your cleaned tank after all that. thumbs2:

Hmmm....I have a couple rocks in that tank, but I didn't know cichlid mothers that carry their babies in their mouths would actually eat them! Guess I'd better add a couple more rocks LOL

Sounds like it was a ton of fun :hmm3grin2orange:
You may want to keep an eye on your ammonia/nitrite though, major cleanings can cause a mini-cycle and iirc, you're heavily stocked.

I haven't drank in over a year last week I drank Jack Daniels in mass quantities. It will be at LEAST another year before alcohol touches THESE lips LOL. Even when I used to drink regularily I drank beer. Not sure what I was thinking drinking that devil water last week! LOL. A heavy price was paid, THAT I assure you LOL

So, where are the livebearers unless you went out and got another tank?
Glad you will be free from the money pit. Not point if it isn't working out.

This thread caught my eye because I'm new to freshwater and was thinking of getting a 125g after I experiment more with my new 29g.
I have a 65g saltwater and people don't take their rocks out in saltwater-land unless there's major damage, especially not just for a cleaning. Is this normal in freshwater-land to take *everything* out for cleaning? I was under the impression that I will just be able to siphon out old water while skimming the substrate for waste.
Is what you're doing to your tank a typical cleaning?

Hmmm....I have a couple rocks in that tank, but I didn't know cichlid mothers that carry their babies in their mouths would actually eat them! Guess I'd better add a couple more rocks LOLAfrican mouthbrooders (which seems to be most of the rift lake cichlid species) are done with the babies after they spit them out. Once they've been evicted they're fair game and any fish (including the mom) that can catch them will eat them. One way around that is to strip the fry and raise them seperately. Not hard to do and can be done at any point while the mother is holding. I personally (with my old set of peacocks) would wait until at least the second week before stripping the females since the fry would be a bit larger and have a better chance of being raised successfully. Some people strip as soon as the female holds and use a tumbler to hatch the eggs, but momma always did a good job why not let her do that. Just food for thought.
And great job on the tank!
