Hi,

Can anyone tell me in detail the function of the power head?
I am looking to install one but not sure what it's real function is.

Thanks

It moves water. It is goor for circulation oin parts of the tank with little or no water movrement. Basically it is a mini under water pump. How large is your tank? What kind of filter? You probably do not need one.

Powerheads are great for polishing the water if you have the filter attachment.
Reverse flow powerheads are great for running an under gravel filter system.
They are great for water movement in a big tank.

you probably dont need one in a tank less than 55 gallons unless you have a coral reef. in 10-20 gallons tanks the return of the filter is usually enough circulation

I use 2 AC50 powerheads on my 90 gallon simply to polish the water with the sponge filter setup I rigged for them. They do a great job of creating water movement as well as trapping particles in the water column.

There are many styles and sizes and they can be useful in tanks as small as 20 gals depending on the decor and fish type.If you have a lot of rock work or ornamentation a powerhead can be useful to keep detritus from settling in around the nooks and crannys.Hydor makes a very good powerhead for such purposes with there koralia line. They are a completly submerged type and are heald to the glass with a magnet.I have one in my 55 gal that is only about as big as a big goose egg.I keep it on the move to help eliminate any stagnate spots.
