Hi everyone! I am new to this site and the aquarium hobby as well. Recently I decided to start with the hobby and I asked my friend who has quite good experience in this to help me start. So he took me to a local aquarium and after seeing the fishes there I was excited and one fish caught my attention. It was transparent with a white tone on the body, very fast moving and totally harmless. The shop keeper and my friend said its a bonsai white shark. Finally I bought it and it has grown in size a bit too. It pretty much looks and moves like a shark. It always stays on the bottom part of the tank. But when I search the net to find more details about this shark I don't get any result because this is not a bonsai white shark. Even my friend or the shop keeper is not sure of its name now. Can some one please help me out in finding the name of this fish?

I'd have to have a full body shot of the fish for an accurate ID, but it looks rather like a Rama species from what little I can see.

He's gonna grow a good bit more too (they get a couple of feet long). Do you have a fish pond on your property that you can put him in when he grows?

Here's a profile on channel catfish with good information:

Right now I cant get a pond or something as I am in my college hostel. I have a small tank only. A 5L tank. Only after eight months atleast I can think of getting a new one. Do you think it will be enough till then? These two fishes have already started to sit down most of the time. Only occassionally they swim around.

Unfortunately, no, that tank is no where near big enough for him. 5 liters is very tiny, really only suitable for a lone betta (even then it's too small) or you could do a very cool shrimp tank. I would take the fish back to the fish store since he will outgrow the tank in less than a month, if he hasn't already (and really, he has, that's only a 1g tank). If the fish are already quite inactive that is not a good sign. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Thank goodness you informed this at this time. Later than this I might be facing lots of problems with these two. I ll return them in a couple of days and probably buy a betta. Many of my friends have bettas here. Thank you so much for the info you saved their lives! :)

Yeah.... that thing is going to get HUGE. Like 3 foot and 40 lbs... I've fished for these things and a big one'll give you the fight of your life! They're monsters.

I don't think it's a channel cat. Looks more like an albino colombian shark to me. Shorter whiskers and longer, more slender body. :fish:

...tough pic to id, but the op should be able to figure it out, it's definitely either/or.

No problem, a betta is a much better idea!
