I feed the occasional tiny earthworms, grubs, or crickets to the tank. I find them when doing gardening or yard work. Nothing but the ghost shrimp seem interested in them. Even the Betta's seem to prefer flake! Is this unusual or what? Anyway, you hear conflicting advice.

Feed live foods!
Don't feed live foods!
Feed live foods!
Don't do it!

What's the verdict?

Also, this year I am going to have to spread some ant poison around the house. Will this contaminate anything I find outside, even the worms?

any outside insects can be in contact with poisons.

The fish can get sick from it

I've read the even feeding live goldfish as feeders can introduce parasites to your fish. I thought of giving my angels live worms, as well, but you never know if they lived in a compost pile or a manure pile so I just decided to not give them any.

On of these days I will give the ground beef heart and veggies in gelatin a try tho.

For the most part, when you buy worms from a bait shop or whereever, they are fine. I wouldnt go buying feeders from walmart anytime soon though.

If you are spreading ant poison its a safe bet that you don't want to feed live foods from your yard. It could really kill your fish.
