Are you asking about switching substrates or are you trying to get a new tank started?

It sounds like they want to change color of the gravel.
It should be fine! Your filter holds the largest part of your cycle.Do a good gravel vac before removing it.Your tank will stay much clearer.
Rinse the new stuff before adding it.
Do not rinse your filter out for a week or two after.
Pics of the change would be nice!

Wash it well and drop it in. You can use your net to take out some of the old and put in whatever new stuff.

(OP wants to replace a small percentage of the existing substrate)
