I'm going to be moving my fish in my 29 gallon into a 55. I'm going to buy a filter for the 55, but will set it up on my 29 before I move my fish, so it can get the get the bacteria built up in it.
Here's my question, what type of filter would you recommend? I've got a penguin filter on the 29 right now and have an aquaclear on my 10. I'm contemplating getting a canister filter for the 55, but want to see what everyone else recommended.
Thanks,
KU

A large emperor or penguin should do the trick. if you are going to get a canister, get one for the 55.

I meant the 55, not the 29. Are there any certain brand you would recommend for a canister?

hi kufan, the eheim and fluval are the ones most used here. Both are very good filters and very quiet. You will still need a HOTB to pick up debris from the other side of the tank however unless you plan on having a planted tank.
I have two HOTB on my 55 and they do a good job so far and I have a good load of fish in there. But, I also do large water changes each week, as well. This would not be enough without those water changes, I think. I have an Emporer 400 and a Penquin 350 on mine. Both work just as well as the other.

I personally have Ehiems on my 150g tank and a whisper 60 for the HOTB which works great. On my 50 gal I had just a whisper 60 and ran that with my 2 jack dempseys, 2 blue gouramis, and a convict and it worked great. I would totally reccomend the whispers. Good Luck.

on my 55 i have a fluval 305 that i got brand new off of ebay for $88 (you can't beat that deal with a stick!!) i also have a whisper 60 on it also. i love the fluval it's absolutely quiet unless you're running co2 up through it, but even then there is hardly any noise.

I think I'm going to put some money into a good eheim. I've read reviews on the fluvals, and most of them say they are loud. Those of you that have fluvals, do they seem loud?

I can tell you that the Ehiems I have are very quite, so much that I can't hear them unless I open the cabinet and stand pretty close.:19:

Thats what I've read on the ehiems. Plus I figure that this is my first large tank/canister filter, so I figured I would spend good money on the filter. Or would I be better off not spending a lot of money on an eheim and go with a fluval, since I have not ever had a canister filter?

These Ehiems are my first cannisters also, and they came with my tank. I have never read anything bad about the Ehiems except the occasional complaint about price. Here is a link to theEhiems ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]) on Dr. Fosters and Smith who has them on sale for very very good pricing with 2217 at $127.99 when my LFS has it for $199.99. I can tell you that they have ZERO bypass so everything goes through the media, that is well worth it to me, not to mention the tons of accessories I have been able to find. I don't know much about the Fluvals and others but I have read mixed reviews of many. I was told at my LFS that the Fluvals have been revamped recently and should be much more reliable than previous as he said they had impeller issues and ect. I am not an expert but this is what I was told and have read. Best of luck.:14:

Thanks for the link. They just got a new shipment of the Eheims in, so I'm thinking I'm going to order one.
