Can you jump start a new aquarium's cycle using an existing filter cartridge?

What I've done in the past is to swish the sponge plate or bio-wheel from an in-use aquarium into the new one. But can I just take the floss filter cartridge from an established tank and use that in a new one to get a new one going?

Thanks!

Yes that will work just fine. Should be an instant cycle.

Same here... done that with pretty much every tank I have. I keep extra sponges or filter pads in my filters just for that reason. thumbs2:

Used media from a healthy tank is the best and fastest way to cycle a new tank. :ssmile:

Should work. Could be some variances (did I just make up a word?) depending on tank size.

Also; Thanks for reminding me I have a mini-sponge in my twenty gallon I can use when I start cycling the 5!
