I am making a temperate water tidepool tank.
i have been researching tidepool ecosystems because this tank is going to be setup to resemble the true environment.
it gonna be stocked with
limpets
chitons
starfish
sea anemones
macroalgaes (probably smaller kelp)
NO fish

After researching the Oregon coast tidepools it said that their coastline consists mainly of volcanic basalt and the rest is sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
Live rock will not work because it isnt natural for tidepools. but it will be in the filter.
So which of those will be the best for the tank trace elements and such?
volcanic basalt
sedimentary
or metamorphic
or if there is another safe and natural option I am free to suggestions.
Thanks a lot guys, and please make sure that these are rocks I can find in a rockyard.

also very important. I am looking for sufficient lights for this tank. Aquatraders has a 20in. 50/50 36watt power compact for only $25.
this tank is 20in. long and very shallow so it will hold probably about 4 gallons.
I have heard some people say to never buy stuff from them cause its a peice of crap but ive heard others say that theyre perfectly fine with it.
what to do? I want a nice light with full spectrum but I CANT spend a lot of money. i dont want to much energy consumption either.

Sorry for all the questions but I know yall can help.

Sorry I can't actually be of any help, but this does sound very interesting. Do you have a camera? I'd love to see the final product when it's finished. :bump:

Sorry, they extended my contract until december!

Haven't forgot though. I have learned quite a bit about tide pools, but what I am seeing is that a lot of aquariums treat them just like regular SW tanks...

For the most part they are just really harsh SW enviroments.

Will keep looking though.

Specifically you want to know-

What type of rock is ideal but still locally available?
and-
what kind of lighting you need?

Correct?

thanks, I was talking to someone else who setup a tank like mine and he just used really any sandstone/river stones. I bought the rocks already and built my own filter/refugium/propagation tank. Sterilite comes in handy:hmm3grin2orange: . Im still working on lighting though. Im thinking about an 18in. 40watt T5 setup from doctors foster and smith.
