Hi, I need a little bit of help. I am currently cycling my 20g long tank and since it takes me some time to make up my mind on something I am now thinking about what to put in it. I was thinking of:
1 betta with 6 platys or
6 dwarf neon rainbow and 1 honey gourami.
Would these work?

I think they would work. You could add more stock with the first choice. Corys would be nice.

I have been leaning towards the first one, Love Bettas. I have smooth gravel/rocks on the bottom would that hurt the corys? The gravel is about the size of peas maybe a little smaller but not by much.

Either of those plans would be fine. I agree with adding a bottom dweller such as cories since the tank has a nice footprint for them.
Personally,
I would steer away from the rainbows. Yes, a 20L is technically big enough, but the other fish are probably going to fare better. You might also think about adding some nice shoaling fish like 6 black neons (or the like). Here is a link that might help you get some ideas for additional fish:
