hey guys...went dipnetting again (is this getting annoying for you?) and have some more pictures to post.

the day was beautiful for dipnetting...unfortunately I got stung by what i'm assuming is a walking catfish. I had two in the net when it happened, though I didn't see it when it stung me. it went between my nail and the skin and it began bleeding and throbing and was extremely painful (perhaps i have very low pain treshhold? ) for over two hours...as a result of which I wasn't very concetrated and did not get great pictures nor pictures of everything we caught...sorry!

here are the pictures I do have (split up over several posts):

a new species for me, i was told these are Black Acaras (C. bimaculatum) - is this ID correct? these guys were very abundant in this spot...

right in the spot where all the acara were caught, i kept getting fry in my net, which I assume were Acara fry:

we also caught many brilliantly colored salvini. even the small ones had this very dark, strong red spot:

both species caught together in the same spot repeatedly. if you look closely on the far right you can see another fry:

here is one of the three catfish caught...is this the Walking Catfish? if not, what is it? this is also another new species for me!
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

as usual caught many Mayan cichlids (C. urophthalmus):
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

surprisingly only caught ONE T. mariae (spotted tilapia):
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

also caught only one bluefin killifish (L. goodei):

managed to catch a single Bluespotted Sunfish (E. gloriosus):
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

another new species for me - i have no clue what these fish are. everyone calls them "gobies" - but what kind? I can't seem to find any info on them...help me out? caught two of them at the same time in very shallow water - breeding pair or something?

i tend to only catch one crayfish at a time? here's the one i caugh yesterday:
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

also caught me some ghost shrimp but didnt manage to get pictures of them.

this is the bigger of two clams I caught - this is the first time i ever catch live clams :)
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

that's it for my pictures. i took home the snails, clam, crayfish, ghost shrimp, a pair of acaras and the two gobies.
the other fish were released after photographing.

comments welcome and as always, help with IDs needed and highly appreciated :D

Awesome catch.. That does look like a black acara, except the coloration on the fins are different to the ones we have here

The catfish looks most like a Tadpole Madtom Noturus gyrinus.
Next, you have a Fat Sleeper Dormitator maculatus. Such beauties - if they didnt get so big I'd get a m/f pair.
Your first three sunfish pics appear to be Warmouth Lepomis gulosus (no doubt that the first one is)
The last sunfish picture is Spotted Sunfish L. punctatus.

Oh! I also forgot to mention, that YES, madtoms (especially tadpole madtoms) do deliver very painful stings caused from the venom in their spines. Madtoms usually aren't feisty once you have them in hand, but it's the ones that you don't see that get you!

Cheers, and I enjoy all of your dipnetting photos.

not all. in the past i took bluefin killifish for my planted tank. i have now about 18 of those so i dont take any more home. in my parents cichlid tank i've taken pretty much 1-2 of every species i catch. this time was my first time with the black acaras so i took a pair home. same thing with the gobies.

most of the time i just release the fish back. if i have other club members with me i've given them what they want and the rest goes back in the water right after i take a picture of it. so essentially i'm doing it for the fun of it and photographing/cataloging the species found where and when throughout south florida...

I notice you have copyrited those pictures..... do you sell them or....?

i dont sell them, but i do host them on my own server and dont want people either passing the pictures as their own ("look at this tank bred jewel that i'm selling" when the picture is of a wild-caught jewel...) nor using them and wasting my bandwidth without my permission:ssuprised:
i've been taking pictures and uploading to my website for years, so i just got into the habit:11:

thanks for the IDs. i'll never understand how the warmouth can look so different from fish to fish! i'm going to research the gobies as i didnt know they get "so big":ssuprised:

well i can vouch for it being painful. i had never caught a madtom before so hey, painful first time but a first time nonetheless:22:

You're welcome. Yup, it's not uncommon to hear people calling warmouth the chameleon of sunfishes (although they don't have the colors of others).
The fat sleepers are very cool fish. Can live in fresh, brackish, salt and their colors are magnificant on both males and females once they get about 5+ inches.

thanks for the info UncleWillie, i hope mine pull through. they have had an extremely difficult time adjusting to the tank for some reason?

i totally forgot to include this picture in the original post. it was the most colorful jewel we caught that day:

Man, when I was younger it would have been so up my alley to do that. Shoot, I'd still like to if I was having a good day(blush) . I remember asking for helgarmites for my birthday once when I was a little girl. Sure enough, my granddad caught me some and brought them to my birthday party.

Thanks for sharing the great pics. Love itthumbs2:
