View Full Version : New Puppy! (We knew it was bound to happen)
Word to the wise...never think you can just stop at the Humane Society and come home scott-free...(blush)
We didn't get quite what we wanted - which was a 6-12 month old American Bulldog male (white in colour)...but we did get one of the breeds on my short-list.
We got a 10-week old Catahoula Leopard Dog cross (not sure with what...they're guessing pitbull)(black in colour). He does have the short, easy-care coat that I like, and basically the athletic look I like. Otherwise I don't think he'll be an outstandingly good-looking dog...probably average...but we think he's nice looking.
He was part of a seizure (taken from someone with more animals than they can look after)...along with 3 sisters, from the northern part of the province. They just arrived at the shelter last night.
He's a bit thin, but the vet check was good, and he looks healthy. He was very calm at the shelter, hubby and I both rolled him - no signs of aggression...
So we stopped for puppy food on the way home...and then the grocery store (for people food)...and he was quite good given it's the first time he was on a leash...
Got him home...let him get sniffed by the other three - through the crates...Celeste isn't a happy camper...gave him a bath (*whew* he reeked)...fed him dinner - which he inhaled :ssuprised: . Took him potty and then introduced him again to the others - outside of the crate.
No problem with the mini-Dachsie. The old retriever was okay with him. And as I mentioned, Celeste is not a happy camper, but I think she'll come around quickly (you can just see her in the background...looking depressed).
Here's a quick pic...I'll get better ones when I take him out again...he's sleeping now...that's one puppy that had a HUGE couple of days...:hmm3grin2orange:
His name is Job.
BTW...this is NG's fault. If he didn't get that cut Jasper puppy...

Congratulations!!!! He's precious! I have a catahoula mix (prob with pit as well) and he is an awesome dog. Very high energy until he was about 4 years old, then he mellowed. Great dogs, you should look into running agility with him, the catahoula are very athletic.
Cool! Have you posted a pic of him? I'd love to see what an adult mix looks like.

It's very exciting! :19:

Here's Aussie:
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
Here he is after getting in trouble for eating cat litter. It was that "World's Best" litter made from corn cobs, iirc, and he found it quite delicious (no cat poop was involved, tg). It looks like he was snorting cocaine with the powder on his nose.

And with Carson, the puppy I rescued:

Cuties! Both of them! :1luvu: Thanks for posting.:11:
Aussie looks more Catahoula than Job...but Carson looks like Job in the head...
Maybe the shelter is right...maybe he is part Pit...
I'm going to be very curious to see how Job matures and what he's gonna look like...and how big he's going to be. He's 20 lbs now - at 10 weeks. He won't be huge, but I can't tell if he's going to be medium sized, or a bit bigger.

Thanks! Aussie is about 55 pounds, so a decent size, but very manageable. I got him as an adult so I'm not sure how much he weighed at that age. Job looks like he's gonna be a decent size, his paws look pretty big. Definitely keep us updated on him, I love puppy pics!

BTW...this is NG's fault. If he didn't get that cute Jasper puppy.
LMAO!! He is a handsome guy!
Great job Rue!
I'm sure Celeste will come around soon.lol Just give her some extra attention for a while.
He definately has some pit bull in him. That muscular jaw line shows that.
Nice save! He may just prove to be the perfect choice.thumbs2:
There is a place where you can get his DNA checked to find out exactly what breed he is.Your vet should know how to get it done.It costs about a hundred bucks.
It's tempting to have him DNA tested...but then again, he might prefer I spend the money on dog food...
I think he'll be okay - but the teenage years might be a bit hectic...he'll need lots of excercise!
...Celeste has gotten lots of extra cookie-bits this evening...:shappy:

How old is the pup,any idea?
Has he been introduced to you other animals yet?Birds?
He's 10 weeks old as far as we know. Haven't introduced him to the cats yet. But the African Grey came down to see him (from inside her cage) and gave him a kissie! :hmm3grin2orange:
Tried to take more photos...didn't work...

Funny how the Hubbies are the ones that get volunteered for midnight piddle duties!
I could have sworn it was for her!lol:hmm3grin2orange:
As long as the little guy remembers that the bathroom is outside is all that should matter.I guess!:14:
How was your/his first night?
Cute dog Rue. He looks more Lab and pit, tho. He should make you a good dog.
Thanks! I think he'll be a good dog. So far - one day, and with lots going on in his life - he's been very good! It bodes well *knockonwood*
Today I plan to take him out for mini-walkies...with one of the other 3 each time...to get them all more used to each other. LOL...I'm not ready to walk all 4 at once just yet :help:
I'll start with Hanni (mini-Dachshund)- there's no conflict there at all, I just have to watch that he's not too rough with her (he's at least 2X as big as she is). Then I'll take a turn with each of the other two.
I'll also sign up for official obedience classes - for when he's 6 months old - I'll work it into my exercise scheduale!:hmm3grin2orange: Need to book vet visits for booster shots...it'll help keep me busy and not thinking about food...

Actually - not a peep out of him!:1luvu:
But that might have been because he was so tired yesterday.
Hubby got up at 5 a.m. because the old retriever was barking (he is going senile) like an idiot and took the puppy out then.
And to my credit, I was out of the bed when he volunteered...he could have pretended to be sleeping...:hmm3grin2orange:
...and these are the puppy's new family members...as seen through the dog-slimed back door...

It all sounds like so much fun!
Rue, I never go to the shelter. We did give some thought to dropping in and taking dogs for walks, while we're doing our daily walk. Then we decided against it. We're both "softies" when they have that look...you know, the one where they beg you to take them home. Then you start thinking of the life you could give them. And on it goes!!! I almost brought home a kitten from a pet store, because of that look...and I don't even like cats!
Yes. You can't save them all. And you can't even think about it - it'll drive you insane.:scry:
And even though getting a puppy yesterday wasn't planned per se...I've been looking for a long time - especially the last few weeks. If one of the shelters I contacted had given us an okay - we would have gone to get that dog.
There were other dogs I was drawn to: a pug (I love pugs, and he looked extra sad), a cute chocolate lab with a missing tail (but it was a female and we needed a male), and a couple of others...but I didn't want to stray too far from my short list which included a very short hair coat, a large enough dog to be a companion for Celeste, and also to look intimidating should strangers come to the door...
We spent an hour discussing the pros and cons of getting Job - and then of course the "puppy" charms won us over.:1luvu:
But this is it now - for dogs - for a long time. Won't be looking for any more.

It looks like things will work out well with that trio Rue!lolthumbs2:
I was asked by the lady that I got my pups from if I could help her out.
I love animals enough to do it and I almost said yes!
Thank goodness i said no.I do not have the room or money to build a heated kennel.I have too big of a heart and will get too close to every stray I take in.
Its a job I would love to do but it would be too heart breaking and too much of a health risk to my dogs.

Oh I know. Yesterday the shelter asked if I wanted to foster...and I can't. When we get a pet it lives with us forever. I don't think I can rehab dogs in my home and then give them away.
I could work at a shelter, but I couldn't foster.

Congrats. You have earned him with all your work searching for a new dog!
Thank you. He's keeping me busy! And it's only Day 1...:hmm3grin2orange:
Another good night. Got up once at 5:30. Am staying up...(need coffee though...badly)...need to meet some deadlines for work today...
Introduced him to Celeste outside in the yard today (just on-leash). Nice anti-climax...nothing happened...:hmm3grin2orange: Why do I worry so much about these things?
Now I'll introduce him to two dogs at a time...and after that he should be able to play with them in the fenced yard safely.

Just like babies...only furrier!!!:hmm3grin2orange:
Oh yes...puppies are so much like babies! That's in part why I wanted an older puppy...so I didn't have to do late nights and early mornings...lol...but a few more weeks and the worst will be over...
Lucky that I can work from home at the moment...I should be able to keep up with the potty-training.

I was prepared for aggression. When we brought Hanni home (she was 8 weeks old) I thought Brigs was going to eat her . It took a couple of weeks before he was nice. And he took a couple of months to accept Celeste - but she was around 8 months old. I thought he'd be more aggressive with a male puppy...
I wasn't sure how Celeste would be. She's fine with most dogs...but I've seen her when she isn't -:eek:
I spent some time today trying to figure out why anyone might deliberately want to cross a Catahoula with a pitbull...
And I did find out one reason:
Apparently people want pitbulls with blue eyes. The Catahoula cross can create that.
If that's the case with the people who bred Job - I wonder how disappointed they were with a litter of black puppies (no merle colouration) and only brown eyes?
Still looking for other reasons someone might want that particular cross...
...just found this:
Is the Catahoula mixed with Pit Bull?
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog was derived through breedings with the Red Wolf, Alano Mastiff, Greyhound, and Beauceron. Although some people have crossed Catahoulas with Pit Bulls in an attempt to create a better dog, the true Catahoula is comprised of the dogs listed.
...which doesn't explain what a 'better' Catahoula would be...

I wonder if they were going for an increased body/muscle mass as catahoula tend to be leggier? That's interesting though. I'll admit, my dog is a conformational trainwreck, so if someone intentionally bred him it was a big fail. He's got a great personality and is an awesome dog, I'm just glad he doesn't have his nuts as he is a dog who should never be bred (he's got a chest so wide you could drive a mack truck through his front legs, bow legged, long back with a weak loin, weak pasterns, splayed feet, you get the picture). It's surprising he's as athletic and sound as he is (at 7.5 years old) with his horrid conformation.

They're even recognized in Canada by kennel clubs as a rare breed.
Are they? I just looked through the CKC Dogs in Canada Annual - searching for more info...and they weren't listed at all. I could have sworn I've seen them in there...but either I'm wrong, or they're just not in the 2009 issue.
The 2010 Annual should be around soon, maybe they'll be in that issue?
Well...since I don't know for certain what he's crossed with...I'm just planning on calling him a Catahoula mix...
Lab_Rat
10-28-2009, 04:21 AM
I don't see it at the CKC online site either. Maybe it's a crappy kennel club that recognizes them, I'm not sure. I know in the AKC they're still tracking the foundation stock so they're not recognized yet.
I just call my dog a mutt/heinz57/pound puppy. It doesn't matter what he is, he's a great dog and I love him.

heard of em never seen one yours look great rue. just gonna stick with my aussies and shih tzus lol till the aussies eat em hehehe
LOL...maybe you'd better just feed the lot of 'em some dog chow...
I was surprised to find out that you can have solid black Catahoulas (as well as solid reds, etc., makes sense of course, from a genetic POV) - even though it's the merle colouration that people love about them (in part) - so while Job is a mix, he could sneak in the backdoor...:hmm3grin2orange:
This is just research for fun. I like knowing about all the different breeds and their characteristics. If I had wanted a registered purebred I would have gotten one. But since I have no desire to do any official activities anymore, I didn't need/want one. This is why with Job and Celeste we went the 'rescue' route.
We let him in the family room last night. Geez, he was so good. Basically stayed on the dog pillow (better than the older dogs) and played with dog toys (so far, he's the only dog that does that too). But then he went and spoiled it by peeing on the pillow...lol...

Hopefully he will learn to respect the inside of the house soon.
They do have diapers for puppies but I couldn't do that! lol
Its just not right!
More outside time!:19:
We did have him outside just before letting him in...so it was less than an hour between pees. I imagine he was just a little excited. He's been very good in his crate and is 'holding' it, so we're on our way!thumbs2:
I'm lucky I can mostly work from home this month. I was planning on working in my city office, but I can rearrange things...the major disadvantage from working from home is the dial-up.:fish2:
Everyone is warming up to him more and more. All the kids like him now (they weren't thrilled when we brought him home as a 'surprise!')...:hmm3grin2orange:
Took Job for his first 'long walk' yesterday with Hanni (mini-Dachsie). All good. We did about a mile. He wants to play with her, but he's a bit rough and I'm paranoid about her hurting her back. She did give him what for when he tried to share the outside water bowl with her...she wasn't going to shar at all...that was funny...:hmm3grin2orange:
Today I took Job and Celeste (AmBull). All good. She tried to play with him, but scared him...so I'll to watch for that. She's cute when she's in play mode...but kinda scary - like playing with a missile...:help:
Tomorrow I can try taking 3 dogs...then I can try all four...but I'm not sure I have enough hands...
Don't know how the dog-walkers do it! I have a new respect for them...

Have you got a mountain bike?
Thats how I run my dogs. They get to pull me everywhere!:hmm3grin2orange:
Its not hard to teach, use a short leash.
Oh ya! Make sure you have access to your brakes!:14:
Videos are good!
I feel very lucky I don't have a mountain bike...I have a city cruiser though!
I'm not a good bicyclist at the best of times...I'm woobly...
But! It's gonna snow soon! Maybe a plastic saucer???:hmm3grin2orange:
It did snow! It did! But not enough to go sledding (thank goodness). This was Job's first snow, as far as I know. He found the white stuff intriguing.
Took him for his 'free' vet visit. He weighs 21 lbs. He looks good, except for slight dry skin.
He was a bit whiny in the car (to be expected) on the way there. He was good at the vet's. And then he was carsick on the way back...
Good thing I had my daughter with me...she managed to catch a huge handful of puppy puke...
...good thing we had poop bags with us...
...good thing we had to stop for more dog food - and they let her use the washroom to clean up...
Now he's all tuckered out...it was a big day for him.:1luvu:
