View Full Version : I had to ditch a fin-nipper

It's a shame really. I had a Long Finned Zebra Danio that had grown nicely. Very attractive. He was large, with pretty iridescent silver and blue stripes and nice long flowing fins. He was the most energetic fish in the tank. He has always been more aggresive than the other fish, but never been big problem aside from chasing a few fish. Lately, fins have been getting nipped though. The other Danios, one of the Platies, and the Betta in particular. Although I've never caught him in the actual act, he's the only one chasing around all the other fish. I gave him to another Aquarist (my son) who will give him a try in a new 20 gallon community with slightly larger and more aggressive fish. If he becomes a problem though, he will become a rather ornate and pricey feeder fish. What else do you do with a problem fish like this?

with problem fish, separate them and keep them to their own species. Im not surprised the betta got attacked. Mine gets attacked in every tank except the heavily planted 20g, where he dishes the dirt.

Just what you did is what you do. Sometimes for the good of the rest of your fish you have to make other adjustments. I'd have moved out the Betta tho.

Some other adjustments I made. I allowed the previously weighted Hogwort to float. The Betta now takes cover there. I also added a large "cave" type decoration. Some of the fish are already using it as a hidey hole. The shrimp certainly enjoy the climbing room.

you do have to make some separate accommodations like hobbs said.
When my gentle betta was harassed in my 20g, i ran out and got him his own 2g tank. It wasnt fair to him that my other fish picked on him, so now hes happily in a 2g with a filter.

No new nips in the past 48 hours and all the fish seem more relaxed since taking out the bully. The Platy is already regenerating and the Betta has some new growth on the edges of the nips. Both the male and Female Betta seem to really enjoy the floating hogwort.

Still no new nips. I think I picked out the culprit! :19:
