WOW, did i just get pwn3d.
I joined a nanoreef site, and asked a few questions.
All i got was 100% criticism about my set-up, like-
My crushed shell substrate cant have a goby since its hard and is worth crap (which it isnt, its soft and does not pack and is loose), yet the place i bought the substrate from has a 75g salt show tank with the same substrate, and a goby which plays in the substrate and is healthy.
They also criticized my whisper filter (dunno why), and a bunch of other stuff, including my light, which is made for marine life and has actinic blue which anenomes like.
Glad to have reptileguy to ask questions too

Sad how some sites are like that, newbies seem to just be bait to try out, where as here, right from the start people are welcomed and accepted.
It also have a whisper filter, a tetra60, and I reckon its a great filter:thumb:

Sadly, not all forums can be helpful, such as AC. I, along with many others on this site, have been members (or have tried to be members) of other sites, but were chased away by the comments of the less forgiving. At least we still have AC!

I have only ever joined this fish forum (I was lucky and the 1st I tried was the best), but have found that attitude on forums of any topic.
...post a link! I wanna lurk and read it for myself! :14:
...btw...what's pwn3d short for? Usually I can figure them out on my own...but not today for some reason...

I was a long time member of another forum and got run out by kids. Not young people wanting to learn or sharing their experiences, by kids who were just acting stupid.
My last day this is the two questions I got:
1. Can I sleep with my fish? I sleep with my dog.
2. Can fish get AIDS?
Come on! Now who wants to waste their time and energy answering such stupid questions from 12 yr olds.
When they use a forum as their playground, I can't stand it.

It was a typo of "owned" (meaning something like, "you just got your but kicked!" or something to that effect). So many peopl would hit the "p" key instead of the "o" key, it is just commonly used.

What forum was that. I think i recall something simmilar to that on my old forum.
Oh be careful! I got 'pwn3d' or lambasted for daring to take a 13 year old to task on another forum...
...apparently it's not allowed...and I was painted as a 'child-hater' or something-like...
...where are these kids' parents??? I don't stand over my kids when they're on the internet...but they all have rules...and they know I do 'random' inspections to make sure everyone is behaving themselves.

Dont ask me on wording, ive always failed english
I think people with low postcount and that are new get criticized alot. People think theyre just wanting to ask 1 question then they leave.
Young people are getting really violent now. Just today, a gang came roaming and ran down my alley with cops after them.
Really, theres few safe neighborhoods now. The "wrong side of the tracks" is pretty far away from my neighborhood, yet gangs are allover. I almost got super Pwn3d by a gang once.

Fish.com I liked the site and nearly everyone there but suddenly, it was like grade school let out and they all joined THAT site.
And, as strangly as it sounds, if you wrote too many posts you got heck from the brass. I never saw a forum in my life that wants IN-activity. You got stars for so many posts and they thought if you wrote more than 3 posts a day that you were trying to push up your stars.
What a joke.

I cant remember my first forum. After i left fish for a few years , i forgot it.
The people there were REALLY nice. I remember i went for vacation for 2 weeks, and when i got back my black ghost knife had fin rot on the bottom of him.
Most of the people guided me on treating him, since he was delicate, and were unbelievably helpful. Thanks to their help, my ghostknife got better and made it.

On planted tank forums you get looked down upon if you don't have top of the line canister filters/lighting fixtures/pressurized CO2, etc
On reef forums, you get looked down upon if you don't have top of the line protein skimmers, wet/dry filtration, live rock, corals, etc.
The more specialized a forum you go to, the more snooty, usually, because the people there think they've been through some initiation phase and now can harass the newbies, as they were once harassed. Thus the cycle continues. It's the beginner or general forums that are always best.

Indeed. I guess they had a lack of mods and/or didnt want to put in the work to take care of everything.

To be honest, we do that sometimes too, if you'll browse through some of the posts where emotions get a little carried away.

But that is as expected. When you have a couple hundered active members, not everyone is going to agree on everything. Things clash, but the thing is, neither of us promote the harshness, like it is on other forums.

Right, but I meant there have been times where it's pure criticism of someone methods/equipment, etc. Not gonna bother looking up specific threads, but you know what I'm talking about. It's tough to give good advice but easy to give criticism.

yeah. some sites intentionally use hurtful words.
I bet if i joined another site, and said i have a 180g with a ugf and 5 angel fish, they would still have a triple bypass heart attack over the UGF

Like Chrona when he's trying to explain lighting and plants and algae to Hobbs? LOL Kidding, Chrona. You have been a great help to anyone who asked questions they didn't understand and lots to me personally.
I think one of the problems with newbies is some want every single question answered for them and don't want to take "their" time to do any research. We all know that it takes mucho reading to understand any of this stuff. Trying to explain each and every detail of fishkeeping is exhausting when much can be learned if they'd just do some reading themselves, check out the E-Book, read the "stickies" here and use their google search engine to answer some of their questions. Then, if they can't find the answer, to bring it to the forum.
Or when you get the question....How do you do a fishless cycle when it's right here in big red letters. Or.....can I put a whale in my 10 gallon tank? Or, is it OK to put a stingray with my neons and here's the Compatiblity thread also in big red letters.
*she sighs*

I agree with you completely. I don't mind answering specific questions, because I know from experience that you don't always find what you are looking for via google, and even if you do, it's often confusing (*coughplantscough*) ;)
But if someone asks me why their discus are dying in a new, uncycled 20g tank, I have to hit my head against the wall repeatedly to dull the pain of typing a response

OH.....I got another one. How about when someone starts a thread about building a stand. Then another thread that he hurt his finger. Then another one about falling off his chair as he was building the stand?
Anyone come to mind here. Same stand=3 threads. Who is this masked person?

someone mispelled owned, then it spread like a virus
They also criticized my whisper filter (dunno why),
You (snicker) have a (snicker) Whisper filter? (snicker)
Just kidding!
Pretty sad that some forums are like that. There is another forum (aviation related) that I'm very active in, and if you don't have the same opinion as the majority, they tend to take it out on you. Pretty sad.
I'm quite glad that I stumbled upon this forum, seems like everyone is quite laid back and doesn't take everything so seriously. The way I see it, even though I've kept fish for most of my life, I'm always learning and what better way to learn then to share ideas and experiences from/with other people. And since this site has members from all over the world, the information is invaluable.
Cocoa, what nano reef forum was that? You can PM me if you don't want to link it in this forum.

Yes, unfortunately many specialty forums can be way over the top when it comes to slamming someone with questions. They have a tendency to expect things to be done their way and no other way, whereas we here lean more towards being willing to accept that there are other ways of doing things that may just work! There is also a lot of good information that can also be picked up at the specialty forums, just be cautious about posting and be willing to just read threads and articles. You will also find that there are usually still a few nice people who will answer your Q's nicely without making you feel like you are an idiot.

I am a member of a rainbow forum, cichlid forum, angel forum and two other non-speciality forums. The first 3 treat me very well, answer all my questions and are very helpful. The non-specality forums are rather abrupt but only because of one or two...nearly all are great. I'm not on them often but when I do log into their sites, I know I will get my question answered if I've been unable to find the answer myself thru research.
Sometimes one forum doesn't have all the answers so I occassionaly have to head for the forum that will give me the most specialized answer for a specific problem and I know the ones on that particular site have been keeping the same type of fish for 10-20 years and I know are true experts.
In my opinion, I think the specialized forums have even nicer people but I always try to research and find my own answers prior to asking questions. Google is my best friend, LOL.
