I would like to try sushi, but only under guidance. That is, I'd order after talking to someone who knows all the different kinds and can suggest which ones for me to try.

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone like that!

Educate me, please? What's the difference between sushi and sashimi? (Did I spell that right?)

i believe sashimi is the sliced meat without the seaweed and rice. as far as what to try, most big market deli's have sushis now, and most of what they sell is actually pretty tame. if you find it at a grocery store you will see mostly combo's of: imitation crab meat, cucumber, avacado, cream cheese, tuna and/or salmon. california rolls are generally pretty easy to like, just grab a tray and try a little of the green stuff (wasabi) and soy to start. just like you would try anything else, grab it and give it a bite!!!

the japanese here denied that california rolls are sushi:) my female friend took me to a sushi bar here in mainland, and the sushi comes out on conveyor belt and you just grab what u want... anyways after 15mins into dinner she looks at my plate.. no surpised it was empty.. she asked what are you waiting for.. i calmly replied california rolls... and hmm.. yeah that didnt go to well.. it started with.. "WTH is a california rolls.... blah blah blah blah.."

Good sushi should not taste fishy...fishy means it's not fresh.

...any hint of fishy puts me off...can't eat caviar, seaweed...anything like that...

Fish does taste like fish...even when it's fresh...

I've tried wasabi and thanks, I prefer to keep my taste buds unmolested. That stuff is just TOO hot for me. BUT - I will check out our grocery store next time I'm in, and see what they offer. There's a seafood counter next to the deli, and they make sushi right there, so I'm pretty sure it would be fresh.

I happen to like most fish (hope my tank occupants aren't reading this LOL), and good seafood is one thing I will drive MILES for.

BTW- try a shrimp tempura roll (or anything "tempura" for that matter). Tempura= fried (not raw). Fried= taste bud delight (ignore those pesty arteries!):hmm3grin2orange:

I'll take sashimi over sushi any day. Who needs all that filler anyway?

Actually..think I'll have some for lunch, thanks! Wasn't sure what to get.

and yes..sashimi is just thinly sliced raw fish.

Not a big fish fan overall, unless they're alive and in my tank. ;) But, once or twice a year those little supermarket sushi packages tempt me and I get some California rolls or Philidelphia rolls or whatever minimally-fishy option they have. Love the wasabi and pickled ginger on them.

hopefully you didnt just eat it straight!!!:hmm3grin2orange: i hate spicy foods but think wasabi is ok when it is mixed. you should start with a little piece (the size of a pea to start), and thin it with soy sauce. if you do too much it is considered an insult to the chef. but in the end it is what you like. and there are all different kinds as this thread is starting to show!!!

I love sushi, been eating sushi regularly since i was a little kid, and my first real job was at a sushi bar. I will typically order chirashi (an assortment of different types of fish on top of a bed of rice) and a few random hand rolls to go with it, typically salmon skin hand rolls, spicy tuna, and tobiko (flying fish eggs) and don't forget the Sapporo! I'll eat anything put in front of me with one exception, uni (sea urchin). I actually like the taste, but after the experience of having bad uni 2 times I'm off it for good.

For those of you that don't really know their sushi, and would like to try it, one good way to do things is to ask the sushi chef to make you what they would order. If you aren't willing to try anything raw, stick to salmon, crab (more often than not imitation), shrimp, or unagi (freshwater eel). Crab shrimp and unagi are next to never served raw, and salmon is fairly rarely. If you are willing to try raw stuff, tuna is almost always a safe bet to be good.

Sometimes when I get a real bad sushi craving I have to make sure and not look at my red eye tetras, I start thinking they look similar to little tunas.

what? . ......

by mercury do you mean the chemical?

lobsternoob
10-24-2009, 06:34 AM
Yep the chemical, the heavy metal, most fish is said to have higher levels of mercury in it than a lot of other foods do. I honestly don't believe it is in harmful amounts, but some people do, and pregnant women are often recommended not to eat wild far ranging fish fish like swordfish, shark, tuna, and even salmon I have heard because of mercury content. I could have that a bit mixed up in terms of details or species. In my experience I have had nothing but digestive benefits from consuming fish regularly. Of course then again, not much harm a little mercury could do to me that I haven't done to myself already.

I dont eat any fish unlss its farmed, and I dont like trout or salmon so rules that out.

I was a vegi, and now will only eat meat thats ben bread for us to eat, so rules out a lot of sea food.

Mercury is over feared... Many people get exposed to mercury at their jobs.

The most common form of mercury (the liquid that stays in beads, like what you find in thermometers) isn't even that toxic unless you were to heat it into a gas and inhale it. Then you'd be dead. But in the liquid form you could drink the entire contents of a thermometer and survive, and all the mercury would leave your system on its own without any medical intervention.

Although you would get VERY sick if you tried that... So even though you'd survive I would suggest avoiding such experiments.
