I have already have a cycled tank with angelfish. Now I want to start a new tank for goldfish. Can I use the the filter media from the angel tank so the new tank does not have to go thru the cycle again since the angel tank is already cycled? Are the beneficial bacteria in tropical fish tank suppose to be same as those in goldfish tank? Could the bacteria (from tropical fish tank) survive in a lower temperature as in the goldfish tank?

Yep, same bacteria. Just switch some media over (enough to cover your bioload) and you're good to go.

Yes you can. Move some of the media to the rew tank and you should have litle or no cycle. The bacteria is the same.

I got the same answer to the reverse question recently -- could I use goldfish filter media to cycle a mbuna cichlid tank (the answer was also yes) thumbs2:

Enjoy your new tank :19:

Don't you just love it? Ready made new cycled aquarium!

From what I hear, as Jill has pointed out, the goldfish work well. In fact they are such prolific producers of waste I don't think it takes long to accumulate the good stuff from them!
