What kind of tank are you setting up? Will there be live plants? What sort of fish do you want to keep? All these things will play into the best substrate for your tank. Dr. Foster and Smith has many types of substrate for decent prices.

If this is your very first tank, let me recommend that you read the ebook here to get a good understanding of everything that needs to be done.

You can order fish online, there are many online retailers. I've not used any myself, but I do know liveaquaria.com has a decent selection. There is also aquabid.com.

For substrate, unless you are going to go with live plants, I would recommend regular aquarium gravel. It comes in many colors, but personally I think natural colors or black looks best. Other options are sand, which needs to be rinsed really well but looks nice, or planted substrate, which is quite expensive.

What kind of barbs are you wanting? Tiger barbs, cherry barbs, rosy barbs, gold barbs, odessa barbs, etc? There are many different species and the kind you want will dictate the other fish that go well with them.

tiger and cherry

The cherry barbs are going to be much more mellow than tiger barbs are as far as nippiness so you will have more centerpiece fish species to choose from. A gourami would make a nice centerpiece fish, and you could get a school of cories to fill out the bottom of the tank.
