I'm sorry, I find it a little hypocritical that you shoot and kill these wild animals, not for survival.. but sport. Then care so much about saving the life of a kitten that was born paralyzed. Don't mean to judge or anything, I'm just interested in the way people think.

Umm... he ate them? :11:

Looks good! I need to get out again, it's been too long.

sounds like judging to me; didnt you read that i ate duck for breakfast? i catch a lot of the food that i eat. my freezer is loaded with fish that i catch, and i take ducks whenever i can. they are delicious. and to tell you the truth, i find it a bit hypocritical when people who eat meat oppose hunting (not sure if you are vegan or not). they will happily eat an animal that was raised in horrid conditions and given who knows what kind of hormones, but will say it is wrong for you to take a duck for food, an animal that was allowed to have a chance at survival. this time of year i rarely ever purchase meat at the store. i also enjoy picking mushrooms and fiddleheads and any other wild edible i can get. anyone has a problem with that and i have two words for them(not for anyone here, of course). what does that have to do with the kittens from an entirely different post?? and nowadays, on my pay, i save money whenever and wherever i can

No need to get defensive, I wasn't making a personal attack.. merely an observation. I have no qualms with hunting animals that are legally permitted. However, I did say survival.. In our society, we have no need to hunt. Its like wearing fur, we can.. and it serves a purpose.. but its not necessary.

frank_zappa

if i am being defensive it is because i do not like being called a hypocrite by someone who does not know me, especially. this is not a debate hunting thread, really but a hey-look-at-the-duck i shot thread....at least it was going to be. oh and of course it is legally permitted, at least when you purchase the license and the federal duck stamp like i did, money which fish and game uses to maintain and acquire land set aside for wildlife and for hunters and nonhunters alike.. now i know there are a few other hunters on here that will agree...

oh and i am not taking anything personal...no worries there. you might change your stance if you could try wood duck breast wrapped in bacon

Actually its quite delicious :) We dont have wood ducks here, but similar. I'm sorry if I came off the wrong way, I just like to acquire human insight whenever I can.

Oh, and cool license plate btw.. zappa was a genius

How is hunting for your own meat any different from buying meat someone else killed, in terms of being an animal sympathizer? Or are you trying to argue for vegetarianism? If you acknowledge meat as being a legitimate "need," then it's necessary for survival to either buy meat or provide it for yourself through other means.

Good day Frank!I love duck meat.Kittens are nice too but can be a bit stringy.I too hunt for sport and I eat the animals that I kill.Bravo to you and to everyone else who still understands the way things work. What a shame that there are those among us who feel they they should question your right to enjoy nature however you wish.I used to hunt waterfowl quite avidly and have a whole wall devoted to mounts of these interesting creatures.

Man, I'm jealous, there are so few places near me to do hunting of any type any more it's ridiculous. Most of the marshland we were able to hunt in when I was younger has either been developed or turned into preserves or reserves whichever term theyre using this week... In fact if I even want to go target shooting anymore I have to drive over an hour or pay 20.00 an hour to use the public range.

here is my duck's after-shot. tomorrow he will make a fantastic meal to eat while watching football.

that is rough having to go that far to....do you have any sea ducks you can hunt there?

well, turkey-duck-chicken....but im sure that is what you meant to say, although if i get a big fat mallard, i probably could stuff a teal up it and roast it

but youre supposed to debone everything that goes into a turducken, so i imagine the same is true of a turduckitten

Honestly I would really like to in a lot of ways, unfortunately I can't afford it. Plus even more problems with money since all my clients are around here, and building a whole new base of customers is not something I wanna have to do. I used to be able to shoot right out my back door too, and man I miss that house, but oh well. Nothing like waking up in the morning and dumping a few 30 round mags into the beer cans from from the night before.

Not to even mention our gun laws are retarded here, extra taxes on ammo, had to ship my .50 out of state, and I'm supposed to pin the folding stock on my mini-14 open, but for some reason it's ok on a 10-22 if you go out of state to buy it, or some backwards idiot rule.

And, nope Frank_Zappa, I live right on a marine sanctuary, so hunting anything there is totally out of the question.

Ah yes,,the benefits of living in good ole Kalifornia. In pa,I can still get a concealed carry permit for whatever ole reason I care to give,I can own and shoot a 50 cal for grey squirells if I wish,my sig sauer is still looked upon as a dang fine piece of artillery and my 16yrold [if I had one]can go huntin by himself with any piece of weaponry he/she chooses appropriate.Thats what you all get for letting all that xtra sunshine go to your heads.

hehe right on you two, If i wasn't born and raised here(with many summers and other months spent elsewhere), and my family didnt need me around, I sure as heck wouldn't still be here, and as you said Birdofpray, you couldn't pay me to live here if i had the choice. Only things I even like are the woods in Big Sur and going to Jade Cove anymore. well, also gold prospecting up north every year. But my biggest beefs are the bad gun laws, the insane cost of living here, and the crazy lawMAKERS, we have some seriously dumb laws that get passed. And the central coast between San Francisco and Big Sur is like the dumping ground of ex hippie acid burnouts and schizos. It's an interesting area here if you like people watching and meeting some real characters, but im more the outdoors type of person, I want to be out there where no one else is, and that just doesn't happen easily here.

Oh, and Smaug, I have no problem getting a concealed carry permit, but apparently when I renew next year, I'm gonna have to get a permit specific to each and any gun I wish to carry, at god only knows what price for each!

I know this has all been off topic a bit in regards to the thread, but it did give me a nice opportunity to rant, so thanks Frank_Zappa, and I also want to mention that duck dressed out and even uncooked made my mouth water, ENJOY!

Well, there's pay and then there's family... the first you can refuse, but the latter is much more important. :22:

bird of pray, i lived for a while down in houston. in texas you dont get all the road rage you have here and it is all because you never know who is packing, ha. all i have are a couple 12 gauges and a 22 rifle...my buddy has a 30/06 handgun that i am actually a little scared to shoot....not quite this bad, but you get the point:

i am getting ready to cook that duck, and i will post some photos of it, so that this thread can come full circle....ha

smaug, i didnt realize that you lived in PA. now that is a funny state. i once went on a 6 person charter fishing trip with just my brother in law and 4 random coal miners from PA that we had never met. i have NEVER seen 4 guys drink so much in my entire life....im talking 100 cans on the deck of the boat by the end of the 10-hour trip and also pint of beam....and i never even saw them stumble and this is in about 6-7 foot seas, and one of them was sortve taking it easy....reeeeeeediculous

lobster, again, sorry you cant hunt without a hassle...it is sortve a hassle for me too in eastern mass....i always hunt in maine because thats where my hunting buddy lives...only an hour away

frank_zappa

it is impossible to purchase wild duck anywhere in the united states. everything you buy is farm raised and is nowhere near the quality of the wild variety. wild duck can and should be served rare and it looks and tastes like red meat, like very tender beef or venison. if you overcook it you ruin it. if you tried that with store bought poultry you could get seriously ill.

i stuffed this duck with the remaining plants in my little herb garden, and few bits of butter. then i smeared it with butter on the outside, sprinkled it with salt, and garlic pepper. i put it into a 450 degree oven and dropped it to 425 and roasted it for 20 minutes.

it is amazing and i earned it. i had to get up at 3 am, drive to maine, get to the pond and set up decoys, set up the blind, all before 6:15 on a frosty morning. i got to glide across a pond in the dark and it was clear and the stars were amazing. i was all set up maybe 15 minutes before everything wakes up and i was out there in the middle of it and there is really not much that compares with that.

Demi, I'd be upset if I saw that too, I think just about anyone would, In fact I know If you asked the OP here, and the other people that hunt these animals and have said how much they enjoy them they'd be upset also. Just look at that nice duck dish Zappa cooked up. I'd be pretty pissed if I saw that, especially since its so rare to get good duck here. Why anyone would kill a complete non pest animal with no intention of eating it puzzles me.

Heh, this thread has brought around some interesting posts. But I am so hungry for some good duck now and I know of no place around here I can get it non chinese style without going to pebble beach and paying 200$+ for a meal.

and i go by the law as far as limits, seasons, purchase of a license etc.
dont mistake me for anybody that just likes to shoot them; i do it so i can eat them
