For the last few years I've been buying insurance from a different province (ya, kind of against the rules but, meh its cheaper!) And so a couple weeks ago I decide to "come clean" and get it proper insurance. I go to the ONLY Gvt. Inspector here and he says "Hmm, yer brakes need replacin' and I cannot pass it because one of two license plate bulbs don't work." This guy has one visible tooth, rancid breath and about 8 hairs on his head.

So I ask him to prepare a quote, listing all the parts needed, number of hours labor it will take to install and leave. The next day, he gives me a quote; I say thanks, I'll call you right back. I call the place he's buying parts from and this toothless wonder has an almost 100% mark-up on the parts! So I buy the parts, saving huge amounts of money, take them over to Mr.Bad-Breath and say, okay, now how much will it be? He says "Oh I'll have to talk to my accountant..bla bla bla" THE next day, I call him and ask and am told the price. Its almost 200 dollars MORE than the original price! Even AFTER I've supplied my own parts. Now, keep in mind, I've only got two weeks to get the required repairs done or I'll have to shell out another 150 bucks for an inspection. This goes on for a week. Each day I call and ask about the quote, the price goes up.

But I'm not totally retarded. I've been calling other shops, getting quotes for the work needed. I end up getting the work done at another place, saving almost 600 dollars when all was said and done. I then go to the insurance company. It's the only one in this province. Their in ka-hoots with the government and charge large but, what am I do to? I need this truck on the road as I don't want to use the newer one during winter because of all the useless winter drivers in these parts.

I am then told, after another "visual inspection" that I have to PAY a SALES TAX on the truck that I OWN!! I was like "What?!?, that's illegal!, Free Trade and all that" The lady just shrugged. Said that was the law. I left. Called the agency who handles this company and yup, sure as sugar, it's true. I ask him about 150 questions and finally get him to admit that if I were to have registered it within 30 days of being here, I'd not have to pay.

Fantastic! I'll just drive to the next province over (about 8 hours driving at night), register it there, come back here and, seeing how I just got it inspected, re-register it and not pay the silly Because-We-Can-Tax. He said, yup, that will work.

Then I decided that I really didn't want to spend two days driving and fabricating a story about how I need to insure my truck in the other province when I don't have a mailing address OR place of residence in.

I have a couple beer, and get it into my head to sell the truck! I sold it to a co-worker for 10 bucks, he went and registered it, filled out new transfer papers, then sold it back to me. LOL!!! Should have seen the look on the insurance lady's face! HA! But there was nothing she could do. She knew exactly what was going on but, according to these backdoor laws, it's allowed.

Crooks! Their all Crooks!!!

I feel so much better now. Happy Friday everyone!!!

9/10 mechanics WILL rip you off... Whether it be for parts, labour, or work that needs doing.

Friend of mine was a mechanic and quit because he couldn't stand his boss making him tell people they needed service and parts replacing that were in perfect working order.

His advice was to find someone you know as a good friend, or find a good friend who has a good friend... Otherwise you're almost guaranteed to end up paying a few hundred more than you needed to.

But selling your truck then buying it back... That's epic lolz...

I've always hated trying to find good mechanics. Fortunately, I found a terrific one in the town where I went to college. I had been his granddaughter's Sunday school teacher while I was in high school and she was a preschooler, and his daughter told me to look him up -- and who could cheat his granddaughter's Sunday school teacher, right? As it turns out, he was a great guy: every time I was in his waiting room I'd wind up chatting with another customer who would tell me how wonderful he was. One lady said he'd done work on her daughter's car not long before her daughter went on a trip to a town two or three hours away. The car broke down on the way and she called him. He paid for a tow truck and took care of everything at no charge because he was the last one who had worked on the car and he said it was his reputation at stake. I wish there were more mechanics like that. Needless to say, I passed around his business card to anyone I knew -- wanted my friends to have a good mechanic, and my mechanic to get good business. I think my biggest regret about moving away when I graduated was losing a mechanic I could trust!

I think I may have found someone here who's trustworthy, but all I've been in for yet is an oil change. At least they didn't try to sell me blinker fluid -- that's a good sign! ;)

I have a firm belief in loopholes especially when dealing with the state and federal system. Because they will mess you over alot quicker than you could ever them. IMO just get a post office box wherever it is your insurance is and say your planning to move there but financial crap happened, cant prove you werent and they cant really do anything about it other than say you need to switch it over.

:hmm3grin2orange: Blinker Fluid! :hmm3grin2orange:

The place I get the 02's oil changes done at keeps telling me my parking break needs to be replaced. What a load of sheep! I can park it on my driveway in neutral with just the e-brake on and it stays. This driveway is so steep, boxes roll down it.
