Hey guys,

Just thought I would let you know about Neon Tetras and NZ.

I hear a lot of people talk about NTD with Tetras. But IMO it is quite rare to ever get it in NZ. I have had it once. And the fish all came from a very run down pet shop.

Any way I did some large amounts of researching. And it is apparently one thing that all large chain and large and small fish shops, a general rule they have to Quarantine all fish for 4 months. And another fact is they get a lot of local bread Neons.

And all of them say NTD is hardly ever seen. May be out of a years worth of Neons they might get 100 or so die of NTD.

Any way that is all I have found out. I just know that in NZ we don't get NTD much.

there was this neon in my school that i noticed has a twisted spine, so i took him out.. i thought it mus be NTD... then after a week in quarantine with no treatment, none of his colors were faded. I then thought it must be fish tb... but he lived a month more in quarantine, eating , and obviously nervous without his school.

Its now been a month that I added him back to the tank.. yeah i took a gamble on him! hes doing everything that a neon should do.. I'll just chalk up the twisted spine to a birth defect

I had read, too, that it is actually very rare and many (most?) times when people think they've got it in their fish, it is really something else.

Really IMO it is more likely not NTD that people get but some other type of problem. Like internal parasites. BUt mind you I do see it from time to time. Just not as much as other diseases.

I guess it all comes down to the quality of the fish, and the suppliers and how they are treated in transit.

Here is a link on NTD for those who are interested.
