Red Son

I've been frequenting the forums for the last week or so and decided to go ahead and register. I'm currently a student from Northeastern Kansas and recently my girlfriend and I started getting into aquariums. I decided to get a 20 Gallon tank to start with, and helped my father set up his 45 Gallon tank shortly afterward. I chose a community tank to begin with, and my hope is to learn as much as I can before trying larger tanks with fish that take a bit more knowledge and attention to maintain.
I originally started school with the intent of becoming an Art Major, but decided to go ahead and try the Business route. I still enjoy designing things, although my resources are limited at the moment(because of both the economy and my schedule :P). I've been researching glass cutting online and soon I hope to start designing and creating my own custom aquariums, as long as I can figure out how to create my own plastic parts for siding and braces(any information of which would be greatly appreciated). As I go about my adventures creating these aquariums, I hope to share them with you all and get your input and advice. The forums seem like a wonderful and friendly community and I look forward to becoming a part of it.
I went ahead and photographed my first aquarium. It's been up for about a month now. For awhile, the nitrites were beyond the measurements, starting a few weeks ago. I read up on the forums here, and to my understanding, it was because I hadn't properly let it cycle through before adding the fish. I did however buy some Stress Zyme and switched the filter out during the 2nd-3rd week and vacuumed the gravel often and replaced about 25% of the water. To my surprise, it suddenly dropped overnight last night(I might photograph the test strips to show you just how dramatic of a change it was). I'm very glad, as I was concerned about how long it would take and whether or not my fish were at risk, even though their behaviors seemed fine.
Its just a 20 Gallon Top Fin tank, probably not the best around, but it works for where I have it.

I plan on making a post shortly in the Tank Setup forum about how to design a tank similar to ones I seen online that I really like. If you have a good amount of knowledge about plants and substrates, please go and take a read and let me know what you thinks. Thanks!
