Snails should do fine with him.

i've kept a longear for some time now, and clams and snails can live fine with it. all sunfish minus very large redears eat worms, shrimp, bugs, etc, and shuld leave your snails alone

My buddy keeps a sunfish - he has a 10 gallon set up with a marmorkreb (marble crayfish). Marmorkrebs are self cloners, so one will make 50, and your sunny will LOVE eating the babies.
