Are fish sticks safe for Oscars

My wife loves those fish sticks that you can buy in the supermarkets. The ones that are often called crab sticks and are pink and white. She always has some in the fridge and I was wondering if it would be safe to feed bits of these fish sticks to my Oscar Spike. I only ask as I know that they have a small amount of food colouring to give the pink colour in them. If they are safe, it means that i will have a constant supply of fishy treats for him in the fridge. I can also then watch my wife get jealous whilst watching Spike eating her fish sticks :linedance: . Any advice will be very welcome.

I hope you aren't feeding it the breading!
I do feed my oscars thawed peeled shrimp peices once in a while as a treat.
Not often though.I try to stick to their regular diet!It makes less mess in the tank.

There's no breading on them, they are plain fish sticks which are eaten cold.

Just to help with any confusion, these are also called seafood sticks. They are pink and white sticks of cooked fish meat that are eaten cold. hopefully that will clear things up a little. they are NOT "fish fingers" as we call them in the UK, which are covered in bread crumbs and eaten hot.

Is it something like imataion crab meat but in stick form?

If it is just cooked fish it should be ok. Raw is better for them though.

well I know that in the US most of the imatation is pollock meat dyed to look like crab meat. now the pollock meat should be good i'm just not sure about the dyes that they use. The dyes might not break down as well in a fish as they do in humans. I'll try and find something on it bbs.

Thank you, it's the dyes that I am worried about. As you say, the rest is just fish, so shouldn't do any harm and I think it is also fairly high in protein.

well i think i found the answer and its no you shouldn't feed it to them. apparently its made with alot of sugar and salt neither of which is okay for fish. [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

That's fair enough, I must admit, i didn't think of the salt content that would have been added to make it tasty for humans. many thanks for that info, i will keep them well away from Spike then, which means that my wife doesn't need to share them lol.

Your welcome glad i could help. you know you could get frozen shrimp when its on sale and keep it in the freezer for quite some time before it goes bad. your fish would appreciate that snack every now and then.
