They are great looking fish!
I don't think you can tell the sexes apart until you see them spawn. The one that drops the eggs is the female, the male will then fertalize the eggs.
Males also have a smaller pointier breeding than the female.

They are nice fish. I do think they are sexable until they spawn.

I have never had a Discus in my life! LOLOL If wanting one made me an expert I'd sure be one but afraid that doesn't work. They are beautiful, beautiful fish.

Regrettably, most times it's very difficult to tell (even by experienced discus keepers) until your discus reach maturity enough to pair off and/or spawn as mentioned in an earlier post. Indicators can be the differences in the vented area or the Dorsal fin tends to be pointed when it's a male. That said, even females can have pointed Dorsal fins.

Hope that helps!

I agree above, its best to wait to pair off.

The more I read about it, the more I agree with DD's post.

Discus seems to be one of those species where its a matter of getting a lucky pair.. Doesn't seem to be any 100% foolproof (or even close to 100%) way of getting them sexed, until they spawn.
