I’ve made huge mistake and don’t know what to do. I finally bought my new aquarium and set it up last night. I didn’t sleep a wink last night because the water pouring back into the aquarium from the filter sounded like a trickling faucet or pouring water into a glass all night! The pump on this filter is not the problem it is very quiet. The problem is the water pouring back into the aquarium from the filter. This is a filter hanging on the back of the outside of the tank. Does ANYONE have any ideas on what I can do to silence this? If not I’m going to have to disassemble everything and take it back. Thank you.

Did you make sure the water level in the tank is full?

Add more water to bring the water level up until it is quieter. Be sure to dechlorinate. Cycle before adding fish.

A single thread would have gotten your answers :)

You'll get used to it. Pretend it's the ocean.

that sound actually helps me sleep... lol
I agree though... fill the tank a bit more and won't be so bad.

I prefer silent as well. Filling it completely should work...

Adding voice to the others - raise the water level, and you'll stop noticing it after a while

It's like the ticking of a clock - after awhile you phase it out

Agreed!! Mine has a gentle hum to it, but you learn to live with it after a while. In fact I bet if I turned it off now, I'd probably struggle to get to sleep for a few nights, because I'm so used to it.

Ditto. Tanks will keep me awake if I need to add water. I've gotten up and filled my tanks almost to the top before they're quiet. I keep mine filled almost to the top frame.

It will take some time to get used to it. The first time I set up a private tank for my bedroom I didn't sleep well for four nights. Now it's just another sound in the house, like the hum of a fridge.

I have searched the DIY section but can't find the thread about this.

The filter on my Betta tank drove me nuts because it was so noisy. I read here (somewhere) about cutting the middle of a soda bottle out, into a wide strip of plastic and hooking that around the output of the filter to quiet it down. Actually, I think it was to reduce the force of the returning water, but it worked as a "muffler" too.

I tried it in my Betta tank and it's great! Took me about 2 minutes and a pair of scissors to make the thing. Love the NO cost fix method.

If anybody on this thread can find the post I'm referring to, it would help to have the exact directions.

Wild Turkey posted it - you should be able to find it through there

Another thought; How big is your apartment/house/etc? You could just put it in another room.

I found it for you. See if this helps.. doesn't cost anything to make provided you have scissors and a bottle.

I have 12 filters running in my bedroom (it's HUGE):hmm3grin2orange: . My girlfriend calls it the spa. She's always had a tank in her bedroom, so if she wasn't already used to it, she is nowthumbs2:

Everything relevant to the issue has already been said.

That was an edit job :ssmile:

What's REALLY weird in my house, is when the power goes out. The silence is deafening.
