Quick filter media question

I have a filter sponge that has not been cleaned but has been out of a tank for a while. Has all of the good bacteria died in it or can it still be used?

How long is a while? Bacteria won't last long if it isn't kept submerged in water, and without a source of ammonia. I'd say maybe a day or two at most.

2 days at the most...I don't have to use this sponge though I have an active one to use I was just wondering if it could work.

I believe it was Dave66 that posted about a month ago about the bacteria encapsulating itself as a spore, to come back alive later. If it wasn't him it was someone else that's well respected.

I've also heard that it dies when it dries, as well as after 12 hours without ammonia.

The active bacteria will die as the sponge dries out, but it will become active again more quickly than a new one.
