Hi everyone!

Two weeks ago one of my breeding jewel cichlids (the femal one) died. They had been living together for over 2 years. Would the male like me to buy him a new companion, or would he just fight with her since she's new in the aqarium?
What do you think?

Hi
He most likely would like one, however you have to find a suitable feamle otherwise the male might end up killing his new girlfriend.

And what makes her suitable?

Well she should be the appropriate size i.e. if your male is adult then you should be looking for an adult female. They should match etch others strength.

Also I am good if the female is in spawning condition. So if possible, condition her before letting her to the male.

Keep a close eye on what’s happening after you but her in the aquarium with the male.

That's good to know, William. I'll keep that in mind if the male jewel dies and I need a new companion for the female.

have the three in a 55 gallon aquarium.... how big do they need to be before they start to spawn?? also how can you tell the sex of these fish??

That depends.

I have had couples no larger then 4 C, that spawned as soon as i got them from the LFS.

You can sex them by the fact that males are larger and more colorful. Females are smaller and rounder.
