Sexing Oscars?

Does anyone know how to tell if an oscar is male of female?

I have asked this very same question of several people.The only two things that I have heard more than once is that: the males have a dot at the begining of their tails (the narrowest part) and are colorful. The females are more of a solid color and have very little markings (plain or drab looking). I guess it's a good thing that the males are not superficial
