Howdy all, been a very long time since I had a tank setup and after spending some time at Sarkazmos' place it really pushed me to get started again. I've always loved aquariums and look forward to filling our home with aquatic friends. Sark suggested I come here and jump in. So for right now I have for the most part just stared out with a used 10 gallon tank my mother in law had. Right now i'm testing the equipment and the tank to make sure all is in good order to begin my cycling soon. Filter is a penguin 125, and a hood with a 15 watt light. It does have a heater although I think it is broken as no matter where I set the dial, it brings the water to 82 degrees. So I'll likely just get a new one. Anyway, I still have more supplies and items to get but look forward to chatting with you all and getting this first of likely several tank up and running.

Looking to setup a community tank with a Betta. I have been looking into suitable tank mates and am finding it tough to decide. Any suggestions? The tank itself will be planted with play sand substrate.

Update on the heater: After taking it apart, (Not a fully submersible unit, hangs on the side) unit is actually fine, the dial to adjust the temp is actually driving a screw to change a mechanical contact. Here I thought it was electrically controlled... So I checked it all over anyhow since it was apart, reset the temp dial and works just fine now. Bought a small digital thermometer to replace the odd floating one my in-laws had...

If anyone has any thoughts, please share. In the meantime, I'll be reading up on anything I can find.
