OK, I've been reading about you guys adding amonia to start cycling in a fishless tank.

I'd like to know if you're using ammonia that you buy in the grocery store, or if you have to go to a hardware store, or does the fish store have special ammonia?

It sounds like it is the way to go for cycling. Is there anything else you have to do, other than the testing and water changes? Collecting established gravel is out.

Is there a site that tells you how to do it?

Thanks.

Kudos to you for wanting to do a fishless cycle!

I found Clear Ammonia in my grocery store, but you may end up having better luck in a hardware store. I've never seen any kind of pet stored carrying them--just get ammonia that has nothing else listed but ammonia and water in the ingredients. You can usually find it wherever the floor cleaning supplies are.

You can read the sticky on Fishless cycling above which has perfect instructions. You won't need to do water changes until your cycle is complete!

You may click on the link in my signature for info on how to do a fishless cycle. Lots of good information in there. Of course, you can ask any questions that you have. Your local supermarket, dollar store, or hardware store (like an Ace) should have plain, unscented ammonia.

Hardware store is your best bet. You want stuff that does not have surfactants, soaps, detergents or perfumes. So ammonia + water. Its called liquor ammonia but people rarely use that name.

Janitor strength just means 10% ammonia so all the ammonia in the isle will be janitor strength, dont let that confuse you it doesnt hint to what is inside.

Thankyou people,
I'll have to wait till I go to town.....40 miles away. Meanwhile, I'll make some water tests. Let ya know the results.
