This is for all you smart, intelligent people who have experience or alot more than I do. I at present time have two large pots of boiling water with 1 piece of wood in each, when boiling the wood the water is real reddish/brown color. #1--do I need to empty the water out when it gets colored every so often or should I just add water to the pots and continue to boil the wood.
#2---I have a piece of drift wood that is not much bigger around than a quarter, it does have some areas where the small type branches stick out, is this O.K. to put into a tank without filing them down?, they are not real bad I just didn't know if the fish would get hurt or not. I figure in the wild there is nothing to keep the fish from getting hurt on wood or rocks in the creeks, rivers or other bodies of water.

Yup! The more you change the water the faster things will come clear. It may be an all day event!.
It took me that long with two coconuts!:19:
You will see it continue to lighten up as the day progresses.

#1 have fun be careful with all that hiot water.

#2 as long as you do not have hyper fish like big balas or silver dollars it should be fine.

Have boiled and rinsed and put new water in pots all day (hrs.). Am getting ready to quit for the night and just soak the wood in a 5 gallon bucket over night and see how it did. I have a piece of wood that has been in the bucket all day and I have poured boiling water over it and soaked it at least 4 times today and it hasn't bled out any tannins in the last hour, so maybe it has worked on that piece good today.

FWIW, before I put the piece of Mopani I have in my tank, I soaked it in very hot water for an hour, rinsed and put it in. It did not cause any tannin discoloration or pH change in my water. I'm pretty sure reading somewhere that Mopani would not have the same effect as true driftwood.

I only use local driftwood and it lowered my ph from 7.2-6.8.
I have soft water.I clean it real good but still get some tannins. Not for long though.
