Hi people

I am new to this forum and as you all seem like a friendly bunch of people I would like to ask you a question.

6months ago I brought Juwel Aquarium Structured 3d Background 550x600mm for my new 7x2x2 ft aquarium.

Well to cut a long story short within 3 weeks of the background being installed within my new aquarium the “Face” of the background begin to peel off revealing black underneath.
Not only does it now look totally unnatural but the peelings have cause me serious issues with my aquarium filters and the health implications for my fish are also questionable.

I am so concerned by this I now have no other choice but to break the entire aquarium down and remove the background and the sealant holding the background in place.

Juwel aquarium have told me there have only been a “few” similar incidents to mine.
I truly hope this is the case and im am just unlucky as it I would not wish this situation on any other hobbyist as it is a truly stressful situation.

So my question to you all is have any of you had any experience with Juwel Structured 3d Backgrounds? or know of anyone who has?

Thank you for your time and sorry for the long post also you can mail me on

I've read of this problem before and it turned out that the manufacturer of this product had several problems with this and replaced the previous backgrounds. That certainly doesn't help much once the tank is full of water and stocked, does it?

I would return it to the store and see if they can do anything about replacement. Perhaps several others have returned theirs, as well. Or, if you can remember the name of your product, look it up online and check out their customer service. Possibly sending them a pic may get you a new one.

Yeah, this is the second time I've read about this problem. I would go with what hobbs suggested and take pictures of it before you break down your tank. Ask the store what they are going to do before you waste your time lugging it to the store only to find out you have to deal directly with the manufacturer! sorry to hear about your problem, by the way.

thank you people for your comments. i dont supose you can remember where or when you heard of this problem and what exactley the problem was? im sure this is not an isolated incident like juwel aquarium claim i quote "only 4 incidents out of 6000 sold in 2006"

i would really like to make sure no one else has the stress ive had or has there fish put in unnessary danger as juwel seem reluctant to tell me what the foam and rubber are actually made off.

Only external backgrounbd for me in future, i would advise the same to every one else

I am searching so many sites daily that I could never remember where I saw this problem stated. I just read of this the past two weeks and the problem was the same as yours. When this person contacted the manufacturer, they were told that they had heard of this problem and it was exactly as yours........peeling and pieces breaking off. They had not had a lot of this problem but knew of it's existence so they should not be surprised to hear from you. IF this is the same company. My thought is it's most likely the same company but selling thru different outlets.

The only thing i can think of is that the surface didnt get the proper preperation/coating/priming. maybe someone fell asleep at the switch a couple times and it isnt a major manufacturing defect. Otherwise they would issue a recall right away.
