Hi,

I am resigning myself to the fact that all I have the resources for right now is a 15 gallon [planted] tank. Is it at all possible to keep barbs if I limit it to say, 4 barbs, or will that be too constraining and cause them to get super aggressive? If so, any other suggestions than tetras for a tank that small?

Best,

J

What kind of barbs? You could keep 5-6 cherry barbs in there.

Yup, cherry barbs. Either 2m/4f or 3m/3f.

Thanks. I suppose Tiger barbs are out?

Oops - ok, I just read the primer. I wouldn't try the tiger barb thing [it was wishful thinking]. Would a 25g would be able to house 8 tigers?

As for the smaller tank, maybe I will look into some cherries, as suggested.

Thanks.

Yes, a 25 will hold 8 tigers very well.

Agreed, 8-10 is a very good number!

you'll want to have at least 7 or 8 of them to avoid them becoming terrors to other fish. even then, it's no promise. i have dealt with a lot of aggression from tiger barbs, but i finally got a good group of 10 that always behave themselves.

i think cherry barbs would be a better choice though. they are still very colorful, but also peaceful and not so as hyperactive as tigers. i have almost bought cherry barbs about 5 different times, and still think about it a lot.

What about gold barbs? I have 8 of them and they are really active playful fish. Good looking too!

Agreed, gold barbs and cherry barbs are the same, just different colors.

Same temperment, but different species of fish.
