As some might have noticed from a previous post, just got these oscars for next to nothing. Case in short, one of them is looking pretty bad. His sides have some white areas, and it looks like his is losing some scales as well. His fins look like they may have fin rot as well, but what is causing the white spots? I am thinking either velvet or fungus, but I'd like a second opinion before I start treating him for whatever it is. Here is a link to a picture of him:

Please help! I would prefer he not die!

id start with a water change and then add melafix everyday till he is recovered. oscars are very resileant and he probably will come good. is he eating? what size tank is it in? what are the tank mates? is it possible its being picked on?

I think he has got picked on by his mate. it will heal up soon if the picks stop. keep an eye on them to see if the bigger one bullies him. add hiding places. aquarium salt helps for those wounds.

Looks like a wound that has since gotten a fungus. Melafix is perfect advice. Start changing 40% of your water every other day also. That should heal quickly. Ditch any carbon you may have.

Thats the way oscars are!
Thety heal fast with clean water and a wee bit of salt!
They are tough fish.
If it sulks for too long the other fish will pick on it.

I've noticed that they ALWAYS stay together (dunno if that means they are mates or whatnot), but every once in a while the bigger orange one will nudge him or push him a bit. Is this just normal behavior, or is he picking on him? What would be the best way to stop the picking? Whenever they get seperated, the big guy sulks to no end...

Give it time! lol
Oscars are great actors. they will sulk one minute and be fine the next.
Your oscar will follow the other around for ever. They will fight, one will sulk and they will be freinds again. Its just a dominance thing!
It doesn't mean that you have a male and female. You won't know that until you see breeding tubes, which may also never happen.
