im stocking 4 red zebs, 5 electric blues(or blue kenyi), 3 melanochromis auratus(a little aggressive) and 3 yellow labs... all are living happily in a 90gal tank. for your 55 pic two species and go 4 or 5 of each. try and get 1male and 3-4 females...if not go all males...

I would aim for 1m/4f of two different species for stocking. Yellow labs, acei, cobalt blues, red zebras, socolofi, rustys, mainganos, and zebra red tops would all be good choices.
Avoid auratus, crabo, chipokae, and kenyi due to their high levels of aggression. Melanochromis auratus are the most aggressive mbuna, they are not "just a little aggressive". Avoid them since you are new to mbuna.

I have a yellow lab, yellow tailed Acei, red shoulder peacock and Hongis living together with no issues. They all seem pretty mellow. I to have a lot of caves and I honestly think that really helps. The more places for them to goto the better I think.
