I have a 24g tank I setup with aquasoil and planted it with glosso and a few other plants. Due to the massive ammonia spike typical with aquasoil, I have not yet added any fish/shrimp to the aquarium. This also means I have not added a single piece of food to the aquarium.

Today I noticed small 1-2mm white worms floating in the water column. Anyone know what these could be? I cannot get a photo due to size, but just a really small white worm that readily wiggles through the water column.

This is going to be a Crystal red shrimp aquarium so I am wondering what I should do about them. Are they harmful to shrimp/young? Should I try to kill them with Fenbendazole? Any info about this problem I would really appreciate. I do not have these worms in any aquarium that has fish in them so this is something I typically only see in my shrimp tanks.

I think your will be fine, the shrimp will end up eating them. Do you have the filter running?

Yea, ive had ammonia readings well over 4 and likely near 6 for the last 2 weeks. With any luck, it will cycle itself :) I have been getting nitrate readings around 10 but I think thats in part because this tank was running before the switch. Im just suprised after 3 weeks, these worms are finding food still. I thought they were a sign of overfeeding.

Yes, always.

You're fine, the planaria will go away on their own. When we first flooded our planted tank, we had planaria for 2 or 3 weeks, and then they just went away. Haven't seen one since.

Edit - oh wait a minute . . . they're swimming? Is there a type of Planaria that swims?

Im a bit confused as to what they could be. They are free swimming yes. I even think I saw a copepod type creature scurry away when I moved a plant.

Interesting . . . found this link:

Seems like some people have had organisms like Daphnia and little worms pop up after using Aquasoil - not that it's anything to really worry about.
