They drink aquarium water(I swear they've eaten my fish before)if I had a small fish tank on my desk, they'd tip it over.

had close to the same problem with my girls betta's we had to keep them on top of the kitchen cabinets until recently when we got them a bigger tank with a divider but now all my tanks are cat proof lol

That's either a tiny aquarium or a huge cat. Even 5 gallons of water would weigh more than most cats could sufficiently push around. The eating and drinking on the other hand... could be solved from a simple plastic lid.

When I clean out my overflow I remove the whole canopy. And my cat binx will mill back n fourth on the edge looking at my oscars... but its funny. My oscars swim back n fourth watching my cat. And all I can think of is the story I read of some couples cat swatting at their oscar and the oscar biting onto the cats paw and pulling it into the water. Cat never got hurt, just wet lol

:hmm3grin2orange: Thats funny. Oscar behavior reminds me of "little dog syndrome".

On a side note, the dechlor bottle says not to use on fish that are to be eaten. Will that have any ill effects on cats who happen to eat one of the fish?

My twenty pound cat kept trying to sit on my very thin plastic cover.
My female cat is an adept hunter.
And my long-hair likes aquarium water.

In any case they've been banned from the bedroom.

They may get an upset stomach at the most.
Everything we put in our tanks is apparently non-toxic.I can't see an animal getting hurt by it!

Where's the lid for that tank? A glass lid or piece of plexi-glass should to on it.

I would get a peice of plexi cut to fit over the tank. Its not expensive.
I busted one peice to my glass lid the other day.I couldn't beleive how easy it snapped.I did have my elbow on it as I was putting my spray bar back together. (blush)

I put the lid on it, it didn't cover anything by the filter. I thought it was important to leave open by the filter.

Funny how cats are. Mine completely ignore the tanks. Never even look at them.

They don't really pay attention to the fish themselves.

My cat loves the fish tanks...she likes to sit on the end table next to the 55g and swat at the fish as they swim by. At first the fish would freak out, but now they're used to her. It's especially funny when she falls off the table because she gets so into swatting at them she forgets she's at the edge.

She also likes to sit on top of them, but there is no way she could tip one over unless it was the size of a betta cup. Even a tiny 1g tank, there's no way.

My cat is fine with the fish. But my friends cat loved to sit on top of his 100 gal, that was until he had part of the cover off one day and we were sitting next to it playing video games and all of the sudden SPLOOSH! The cat went to jump up were it usually sat and went straight into the tank. I couldnt stop laughing, needless to say the cat doesnt go around that tank anymore.

Anyone who is in my bedroom has a responsibilty: squirt all cats on aquariums.(With a spray bottle)

Our 55 is covered and on a stand with no room for the cats to sit. If they really wanted to, they could jump on the tank. They'll sometimes sit on the floor to watch but, if we take them near the top, they squirm and claw us till we let them go.

Our 10 is covered and on a stand made from the top of our entertainment center. The cats will get on it and sit next to the tank. They show no interest in being inside that one either.

When I do maintenance, two of our cats will drink the old tank water out of the bucket.

My 4 young cats drink the discard change water (fish soup?) EVERY time. The moment I start working around my tanks, I have a clutter of cats around my feet. I can always tell when they've been drinking out of my Betta tank because the waterfall sound of the filter is much louder. (Yes it's covered, except for where the filter is.)

They also go nuts every time I open a bag of Hikari food, because it makes the same sound as the bag of kitty treats!

Just as a joke, I gave one of them an algae wafer the other day. I figured he sniff and snub it, but the little beggar ATE it and meowed for more!

Crazy cats....:hmm3grin2orange:

We have 6 cats, and have never had a prob with them bothering the tanks or the fish. All the tanks have lids, so they might sit on top of the tank occasionally, but that doesn't hurt anyone.

The pond is the only place they can get to the fish, but they don't like to get their paws wet and the fish dart for cover as soon as they touch the surface anyway.

In any case, the problem is easily fixed by providing a lid, which also prevents water from evaporating and dust and chemicals from getting in the water.
