View Full Version : Milt's 10g Nano/Frag tank

well guys I could not help myself and I had to start a on a new challenge in sw but this time with a nano. As the tittle says its a good old 10 gallon, I want this tank to be mainly used for frags and have not decided If I want fish in it or not. I have it waiting to be sat up and all I have now is about 15lbs of dry rock, arag sand, heater, koralia 1 ph, and AC 30 to use for circulation/ mini refuge. I have not decided exactly which skimmer I want to use, I was looking at the Tunze nano, I also have no idea what fixture i'll be using but I want it to be T5's so suggestions are welcomed.

Here's a pic of my tiny tank, waiting to be filled :18: I'll be using a rock from my 90g to seed the dry rock and also some sand.

Awesome, another new nano on the board :11: Looks like its off to a nice start to. Personally about the best light for a 10G IMO is a 96watt coralife quad PC fixture or a 70watt MH would be pretty sweet to. Not much lighting options in the 20" range, IMO.

Sounds like a great project! I will be watching this thread! thumbs2:

Thanks guys and I had forgotten how very exciting to set a new tank haha and the 70wattt metal halide sounds like an interesting option that I will look into. It'll be interesting to see how corals react to mh compared to the HOT5 I have over my 90.

Looks like another fun project , I am waiting for the cold weather to set up my 55g into a FOWLR.

Good luck with the frag tank.

Cool, another new tank, lol. We set up our second 29 as a frag tank. We have the tunze nano doc on our 2nd tank and its great, except its a PITA to adjust. I've had it running over 2 months and still haven't got it completly tuned. Its a very fine line between too wet and too dry

+1 on the halide, but be careful. If you put one on the frag tank it won't be long before you have a few over your display, lol. We have one one our newer tank and I've been looking for one to upgrade the t-5's on our other tank, their awesome thumbs2:

Great project, best of luck with it!

09-18-2009, 01:19 PM
:19: good luck :22:

09-18-2009, 06:34 PM
Thanks and im really hoping this new project turns out great with no problems. I don't think i'll be switching my display to mh anytime soon since I don't want to have to invest on chiller but who knows haha Does anyone know of a good fixture to use for the 70watt mh?

09-21-2009, 02:24 PM
well guys I should be getting thos tank wet between today and Wednesday, I need to mod the AC 30 a little first so it can work as a refugium. Skimmer and lighting can wait till the cycle is done a month from now.

09-24-2009, 02:29 AM
My new nano is finally up and running :19: I decided I will be keeping this tank fish less to save myself some trouble/money since I will not need to buy a skimmer weekly water changes should be enough to keep levels low.Now I can concentrate on my lighting and spend a little more thanks to not needing a skimmer. I used a small fully cured rock from my sump to seed the base rock so I'll probably won't be seeing a cycle in this tank at all so I may be able to stock it sooner than I thought I just have to get lighting out of the way haha

here's a pic of my new nano :)

Looks like its off to a nice start!:22:

Thanks Jenn. :)

sorry for the double post but I think I have found to good choices to use mh on my nano.

The price for this one is awesome but I have nothing to mount it on and Im a little iffy on the quality.

I like this one because I can clamp it on and it looks nice but im not sure if it comes with a ballast or not also not usre on the quality.

ahh decisions :help:

From what I have heard and read, Hellolights makes pretty good equipment. I have actually read more negative things about the vipers.

Here is another new company that has a pretty good rep:

I'm liking that fish need it fixture I may give them try since it's not very expensive. What color temperature should I get for the bulb? and what bulbs are best?

10-01-2009, 01:43 AM
I went with Coach's recommendation and ordered the Fish need it fixture and im quite pleased with it so far even if it been less than a day since I got it lol I never dealt with mh before so I have nothing to compare it to, im using the stock bulb but im wondering what would be be a better option. I left the tank running for a week with a rock from my 90g that was fully cured and some sand as well and well it basically had no cycle since all the rock was base rock and had nothing die off. I went ahead and placed a zoa frag and an orange Digi. frag to see how they do this week and go from there. I also placed a ball of chaeto behind a rock while I get a bigger AC filter to make a refugium out of.

Finally running with lights, I love the shimmer effect the mh make

Zoa frag after a few minutes in the tank

Digi frag, I just could not get a clear picture of its polyps grrr

Last week my tank went through the diatom stage that is now gone and now Im seeing tons of pods running around the rocks and sand. The tank is coming to life now, I'm also seeing a tiny bit of green algae growing but not much since the Astrea I added is taking care of it, the tank is approaching three weeks now. One more week and im going to start stocking with more hardy corals and see how it goes, the zoos and digi I have now are doing good so far. I may also end up getting a skimmer so if anyone has an extra one let me know.

10-12-2009, 07:33 PM
looking good. What color temp did you go with for the bulb?

10-12-2009, 07:40 PM
14,000k, its not as blue as I thought it would be but it looks very good, im am using the stock bulb and its more of a while color with a tint of blue lol I can't wait to see how it looks like with a nicer brand name bulb. It's also amazing how im not having any over heating issues maybe because it's getting cold here now but my tank has been staying at 79 degrees.thumbs2:

10-12-2009, 07:50 PM
I have to run a fan over our tank with the halide or it heats up to 84 after a few hours, but that's a 250 watt over a 29 gallon. I personally like phoenix HQI bulbs but I don't think the make anything lower then a 150 watt. It still looks good even for a stock bulb

10-13-2009, 02:26 AM
yes it does but then again i don't know how the nicer bulbs look like lol

11-03-2009, 02:49 AM
I finally got my Tunze Nano skimmer up and running today and I will be moving my sumped false perc clownfish over to this tank as requested by my mom. Nothing exciting really has been going with this tank really over the past month, I will get pics once I move the fish in.

11-11-2009, 11:35 PM
I have a quick FTS of my nano today I moved my clown last week and today I added a head of my frogspawn and a pink birds nest frag to the tank. Im really thinking about a dding a 10g sump later on and will be replacing the stock bulb of my fixture with the Ushio 70w 20K bulb since the stock bulb doesnt seem to be strong enough.
The rock still looks pretty bare but as more hitchhikers go in from my other tank the rock will start to color up, I also scrape some coralline in the water so it spreads on the the rocks.

11-19-2009, 03:41 AM
I have a better FTS this time and as well as some pics of the inhabitants I have so far, all brought over from my 90 :)

There's some algae growing but my snail CUC is currently working to cut it down
finally a good shot of my clown
Pink Pocillipora

Cant wait till the coraline gets growing, if this turns out anything like your 90G it will be a very impressive little tank :22:

11-26-2009, 07:30 PM
I see the coraline growing but it hard to get it in the pictures and its mostly growing in shaded areas.

Today I rearranged the rock work a little and it looks so much better since I wasnt convinced with the way it was before. Now I just need to get a black background for the tank to blend the skimmer and heater in. I also added a few more corals including a frag of my orange digi and some pulsing xenia I got as a gift from a friend, If it starts spreading too much I'll have some for sale lol

11-26-2009, 07:37 PM
oh how I just love nanos:shappy:

11-26-2009, 11:10 PM
I like bigger reefs better but nanos can look really good if done correctly.

Here's a couple of pics of the new scape and coral :)

This is screaming I need a blak background lol

pulsing xenia, I thought I would never get one of these but they're really cool, I won't let it spread too much though.

11-27-2009, 01:33 AM
Tank looks good Milt :22: Nanos have a special charm...I know that I enjoy my 15G reef now more than I ever did my 150G years ago. But then I also learned from my mistakes with the 150G and bought the better equipment instead of trying to cut corners which you just cant do with a reef. The Xenia looks great! Ive contemplated buying one myself but am afraid of it taking over everything as well.

11-27-2009, 01:51 AM
Thanks Jenn, I know what you mean by special I've some that look totally amazing! I can't wait to see where I go with mine since im not really storing frags yet since im not comfortable keeping some of the more delicate corals in there.

I also started noticing that my clown is hovering over the frogspawn, looking at it and sometimes going up to it which is making me believe its probably going to start hosting it soon or already is. Im a little worried since clowns can bee a little rough and an anemone would be more suitable.

01-29-2010, 03:05 AM
I havent updated this in a while but everything has done well in this tank so far. I really havent added much than what already is in it since im letting the tank mature more so its kinda boring. :p I'm getting some softies and so I decided to change the direction of this tank and make it a softie tank, I will update with pics when I get the corals.

02-11-2010, 03:04 AM
since I havent posted pics in a while I have some today :), I added my Mckoskers wrasse to this tank since my yellow wrasse is a big bully. I rearranged the rocks a little and added this dome shaped rock that is a blank canvas for me to fill but im not sure with what yet :s The skimmer is giving me troubles that I have no idea how to fix so I might have to get a another one :/

Mckoskers flasher wrasse

Yellow Fiji leather

Pulsing xenia and Blue xenia

Looks like your skimmer is a 9002...did you talk to their customer support yet? They are pretty awesome. My pump died a while back...I gave them a call, and they sent over a new one.

02-11-2010, 04:10 AM
it is and yes i have called them before because my skimmer sup broke and they sent me a new one with this other thing that connects to the pump. The thing is the pump works fine but it doesnt seem to be producing any skimmate or enough bubbles to do so. hmm I took apart and cleaned it well and nothing, Im pretty sure im putting back together right. It looks like im going to have to give them a call again.

02-11-2010, 10:53 PM
Looking good Milt. We had a 9002 and hated it. It would either pull way too much skimmate or not enough. Someone really wanted it so I ended up trading it for a Atlantis meteor shower and firefly chalice. I think got the better end of the deal, lol

02-11-2010, 10:59 PM
Your wrasse looks great!

02-11-2010, 11:04 PM
Also, How many pounds and what kind of live rock do you have in your tank?

02-12-2010, 04:42 AM
@Lab - I agree you got an awesome deal, im not liking this skimmer at all...

@EmmanuelJB - Thanks! and the rock was base rock that I got from Reefcleaners, I just seeded it with a rock from my main reef.

btw anyone wanna give me some ideas of what I could do with this rock?

Its round and dome shaped hmm... Im thinking Ricordia garden lol

02-12-2010, 05:59 AM
frag some zoanthids on to it, they will spread in no time.

02-12-2010, 07:31 PM
^ a good idea as well, Im undecided since some Florida rics will look awesome on it.
