I have a hi-fin Pleco in my 55 gallon which is 3 inches in length. He is getting picked on in that tank. Can I move him to my 20 gallon which has a rubber lipped pleco half the size?

Why not just return the fish. It will out grow the 20 and it obviously will not be happy in the 55.

The highfin will eventually out grow the 20 gal but you could maybe keep it in there until he gets bigger so he wont get picked on. Also sometime plecos can be territorial so see how they interact. But I could be wrong.

i agree with rich, unless you are planning on getting another tank soon, u can rehome it in the 20gal

At 3", I'll be the dissenting opinion and say he'll be fine for now in the 20gL. He'll have 10x his body length in inches to work with. I stress for now heavily though. By the time he is 5" though, I'd say he'd need to be back in the 55g. Once he gets up to around 7", however, you won't have a tank for him.

These guys are right in the long term, but if you plan on getting a 75 or a 125 (which should be your goal with a common pleco species) by a year's time then he'll be all right assuming your other pleco and he can co-exist.

Mine reached over 10" in a year and a half. The 20 gal is less then a 1/4 the size that fish needs.

Another reason they need a bigger tank is the bio-load they produce. They really mess up a tank fast when they get bigger. Its real noticable with a white sand substrate.:hmm3grin2orange: They are almost as bad as my oscars if not worse.
