You can get the XP3 for $74.99 at Petsmart.com using the coupon code (XP3XP4) w/ free shipping. You can also use the code to take $30 off the xp4 or use XP1XP2 to take $15 off the xp1/xp2.

Pasted from another website. Some darn sweet prices after the coupon.

Dang, what size tank is it rated for?

Uh, there's various sizes, but I believe the XP3 is rated for about 150 gallons.

I stayed in a small town, and fluvals were on sale, and the eheims were older than batman, and didnt look too good. The fluvals really good so far.

Darn you Chrona.....now I think I might just ring his neck over this whole aquarium thing! If it's not one gadget it's another :ezpi_wink1:

As he gives me giant puppy eyes at the Petsmart site!

Chrona, your task, should you choose to accept is to give me (the wife) half a dozen good reasons as to why our 46g tank needs a filter canister and perhaps then I'll let him get a new toy :P

Why canister filters are good-

1. FORCE the water through the media unlike a HOB
2. Generally low maintenance
3. chooseable media
4. Can have large media variety unlike HOB
5. Creates a good current
6. Can be hidden and not too clutterly
7. Draws in water really well
8. Self-priming most times
10. Can hold lots of ceramic rings for great bio-filtration
11. Holds more sponges than a HOB for better mech filtration
12. You can skip the carbon for planted tanks unlike some HOBS with pre-packaged media

There you have it in a nutshell. I prefer canisters ANY day.

LOL

Basically what blackbeard/cocoa said. Plus it will keep more stable CO2 levels than a HOB filter (no surface disturbance)

And they look really sexy (to an engineer) ;)

One last question, you've done an amazing job of convincing my wife by the way! I know this is a great deal, but my wife still wonders if this will be a purchase we'll regret? Is the quality of this filter enough such that we won't be wishing we'd saved for Eheim?

My fluval is great so far. Its easy to prime, has easy media slots, comes with ceramic rings, carbon, and sponges, has a descriptive video, and is super quiet. Canisters are the best filter up to this date in my opinion.

The Eheim Pro II (the equivalent of the Filstar XP3 I suppose) is indeed a better filter (by all accounts), but in this case, it's also 100 bucks more. Many people have the Rena XP3 with a planted tank with great success, as it does the job. If you go on plantedtank, about half use Eheims and half use Rena's. But then again, the half with Eheims also have 500 dollar ADA tanks, 300 dollar lighting fixtures, and a 300 dollar pressurized CO2 rig, so money is clearly not really a concern. The Eheim seems to be more efficient, however, having the same gallon rating with less actual water flow. You can look for reviews on google, and you'll find a loyal fanbase for both. In any case, as long as you don't have an Eheim for comparison, I don't think you'll be able to notice much, if any difference ;) It will be a rather large step up from a HOB filter, but whether or not a canister is worth it is entirely up to you. Biological filtration in a heavily planted tank is really a moot point, since you have such a massive amount of bacteria growing right on the plants (which are feeding them oxygen), so basically, it comes down to the effectiveness of mechanical filtration (which canister filters, with their micron filter pads, are damn good at) and the ability to use chemical media like purigen (canisters have large compartments, unlike HOB's)

Basically....a BMW M3 vs a Subaru WRX sti. Both are damn fast (BMW/Eheim a bit faster), but one looks especially sexy, with generally better thought out components and a certain style.

One more thing, it should be noted that Eheim canisters come with all the media, whereas filstars only come with some pads and biozorb (which you don't need)

Thanks you blackbeard and Chrona as you have convinced my wife that it is the way to go, and we have a canister filter on its way to us(well technically it hasn't moved, but you get the idea).

I must say. This was great. I didn't even have to utter more than two words to convince her. You guys did all of the dirty work and for that I applaud and thank you.

Our labor isn't free by the way! What would have happened if we weren't here? How much do flowers run these days? 20 bucks for a nice bunch? 5 dollars each should cover it since we spared you that expense.

well not exactly. I had to help her pick out fake flowers to decorate the apartment this evening, so i had already earned some bonus points on the evening. (that my wife says I am losing quickly now with this post).

I cannot say more as I am about to be hit repeatedly.

So I thank you for the new filter and the bruises. IF you want i can share some of my new bruises with you as payment for your work tonight:):ezpi_wink1: [end sarcasm]

Disclaimer: my wife doesn't really beat me, but it is not like I would tell the truth with her sitting 2 feet from me. lol

LOL. Alrighty then ;)

Good night. Good luck with the CO2. I looked at a lot of posts and it seems pH swings due to CO2 almost never kill fish - it's usually the asphyxiation that does. With 6-10 bps in a 46g tank and a 100% efficient reactor, I think that may be the issue. The fish get so stressed at night that they finally collapse during the day. Maybe I'm just reaching for strings here, heh. In any case, shutting off the reactor like you said should help.

I would definitely buy Fluvals, I won't ever buy a Filstar. I may use one if you gave it to me, but I would spend my money on a Fluval.
