Hello --

Turning to you all, yet again, for advice.

Could you outline a colorful and good stocking plan for a 75g cichlid tank?

We are actually going to do two, but for one, I already have some electric yellow labs and yellow tail acei. (If you have advice on what else could live with this in a 75, I'd love to hear it, too.)

Could you give me advice for the other tank? I'd like something "easy" in terms of fairly beginner safe and colorful as possible. Nothing that would outgrow 75g as I do not think we'll be doing any tank larger than that.

ALSO, if we did want to do a flowerhorn for this 75g tank (I'm kinda in love with some members' flowerhorns), do they need a tank all alone, or is there something that could go in a 75g tank w/ a male flowerhorn and live happily?

Thank you!
Jill

I wouldn't give a Flowerhorn tankmates. They're very territorial, and it will worsen as the fish gets larger. :ssmile: They ARE pretty though...

For the tank with the yellow labs and the acei I would consider adding red zebras. If you can find the brighter red ones it would be a nice contrast. Either that or look for a striped fish such as mainganos (not auratus, chipokae, crabo, or kenyi though).

Do you want another african tank for the other 75g or do you want american cichlids? A nice colony of rainbow cichlids would be very colorful and you could do about 6 or so of them in a 75g. If you go with a flowerhorn, no tankmates, as they are super aggressive fish.

Rusty cichlids (Iodotropheus sprengerae) would be good with the labs and acei. Have you given any thought to peacocks for the other tank? Unbelievable colors and generally alot more peaceful than mbuna.

Good call on the rustys, I tend to forget about them. Greshakei may also be another mbuna to consider, the males are quite beautiful. I also agree on the peacock tank if you decide to stay with africans. Male peacocks are gorgeous.

Thank you for the tips! I will look into both. I think I prefer the Africans because from what I've seen (and I am big time still learning so may be wrong), they are the most colorful (?). I am very in love with our electric yellow labs and yellow tail acei right now :1luvu: (it's probably too early to turn on their light, huh??? I wanna watch them some more! :11: )

You know, I keep fixating on some of our members' flowerhorns. I think I'm going to "have" to get one of those... so one 75g for him and one for a collection of labs, acei and maybe these rusties! Once I am more at ease with fish, we maybe can put some GBR's or Bovilians in the 29 that is temporary for the labs and acei...

Does anyone know where a good, reliable place is to get a nice, male flowerhorn? I see a lot of them on aquabid but not sure who is and is not reputable? And looking at "Flowerhorn Craze" website, I don't know if there's another group buy or what... I could use some advice as to how and where you get a good (healthy) flowerhorn. The price isn't an issue.

Thinking if I don't get one (since I'm so taken with them), I'll be looking for yet another place to set up a tank and I think we're already going to be maxed out with what we have and what we have planned. I'm not wanting to put tanks in rooms we don't really spend much time in (so spare bedroom is out).

Maybe I should start a new thread about where to buy a flowerhorn...

I have in with my yellow labs, some Kingsizies which will give you some nice blue colours you could also go with some electric blues or cobalt blues if you like and i also have a pair of Chadaghas which will give you a purpleish type of colour, they're a really nice fish they grow to about 7 inches.thumbs2:
