However, it includes a goldfish, Jack Dempsey and a Green Terror. If I was to get the tank I'd have to cull the fish so guess that means I will not be calling about the tank.

I'd be getting the tank and then finding new homes for the fish (though that is not a fun process). Why would you cull them?

if you want the tank then get it. there is no reason to kill the fish. put them on craigs list, talk to your lfs. there are better ways to get rid of fish. and when someone takes them off your hands you will have a nice 40g to stock with fish of your choosing.

I dont think theres any problem with culling fish in the right circumstances.

However, I agree try to find a home for them first if you can! I just found a home for a bunch of misfit tetras and a solitary albino cory, it can happen!

Get the tank and bag the fish,go straight to a fish store and tell them your tank busted. There is a good chance they will take them.

i agree with you turk, there is nothing wrong with killing a fish if you have a good reason, like it is on deaths door already from injury or illness. but not just because you dont want the fish.

either way lady hobbs said she isnt going to get the tank because she doesnt want to kill the fish. i applaud her for that.

Does "cull" in fish mean to kill? When we say it about our breeding horses, we mean that the individual isn't right for our program -- not necessarily a poor example of the breed, but not the right fit for our particular breeding goals / not a good match for our counter part stallions.

Yes its a more professional way of saying exclude or cut out, but in this hobby we mean euthanasia

Phew... and when I stepped up my program with the horses, I felt "a little" guilty about SELLING the mares that I didn't think were up to the level of my stallions. I guess they should be counting their lucky stars that they just got sold (and to people who are tickled with them).

For those that don't know my circumstances, there are no fish stores within an hour of me and then only PetSmart who will NOT take fish. I tried to give away 400 firemouths and couldn't find homes for them, either, after running ads everywhere for FREE. There are very few people who even have tropical fish in northern MI for some reason. I am having the same problem right now trying to find homes for my silver dollars. Been running ads for two months for them and have not had even one response.

Sad

That sucks...now I see why culling would be the likely option. I guess I'm very lucky, I have about 7 LFS within about a 20-30 minute drive and 2 Petsmarts and a Petco within 10 minutes. Also, living in big cities makes it easy to find people who want community fish and african cichlids. Now that huge pleco and oscar were a different story, thankfully the LFS here will take them.

Yes, it's a colossal pain to have a hobby that no one else in these parts have. You never even see fish tanks for sale even in Craigslist in these parts. The only fish around here is on someone hook.
It's an hours drive to even PetSmart.

I live in Cadillac too and I can 100% attest to what she is saying. There is NOTHING here for hobbyists! In order to get to a halfway decent store, we have to travel several hours to Lansing. There has not been a good petstore in town since the little place on mainstreet went out of business, and I think that was 13 years ago. We have had I think three since then, and they all flopped within a short time.

If it wasn't for the internet, I don't know what I would do. Most of my stock has been bought online. And living here, you HAVE to have medications on hand for emergencies, because you don't want to be stuck with a sick fish and an hour or more drive ahead!

I considered calling about the tank in the paper too, but like you I had no idea what I would do with the fish, except maybe the goldy. (I have an 80 gal and a 150 gal goldfish tank.)

That's Northern MI for you. I grew up in Grand Rapids and my Grandparents have a cottage on Lake Topinabee near Cheboygen (sp?). For a relitavely small state, the more north you go the more nothing but trees you see...:hmm3grin2orange:
