Ugh, so i go to walmart this hillbillly couple are looking at fish and me i always listen to their convo. on fish they want. well they were like i like these oscars and venustus cichlids they had. So being me i interupted this couple and asked them what tank size they had oh i have 5 gallon and i was like oh well oscars or venustus fish will not live too long in there. Well they were like what could i said like a guppy or two and a snail with a couple of plants and then they were like i dont like guppies. Well i was like a betta and walmart had beautiful bettas for a change. And i said a betta with plants and a snail would be awesome or an otto or something. Well they told me i know nothing i am just a kid and i almost lost it my last remark was i know more then u rednecks. UNDER MY BREATH. and then they had a tank that had sick fish with ick and they were like disgusting so i took the marker they haad and wrote sick w/ ick and the other tank had sick so i erased he s in sick and it became ick. Ha i will teach walmart to have their tanks in hat horrible of a condition.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people like that out there. At least you did what you could to try and help them. You've prolly heard the saying "you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make it drink". Well IMO that's a pretty true saying. I do some in home tank maintenance for people and I run into a lot of cases like this. Just last week I had a guy with a pacu in a 30 gallon long and I swear the tank was so shallow and overdecorated with gaudy ornaments the pacus dorsal fin was sticking out of the water half the time. If you wanna hear a real bad one look for my thread "some people just won't listen"

Thankfully from what I've heard walmart is basically phasing out their fish deps throughout the chain. So there's some good news :)

I understand your frustration, I used to work at a nice little LFS when i was 14 to about 16, people would come in listen to my advice then as soon as they saw my boss turn away from me and ask him the same questions, guess what, they got the same answers too. It's frustrating when people won't listen and even more so when they write you off just because of your age. There's always gonna be idiot people out there, all you can do is make sure you're not one of them, sounds like you're doing pretty well with that :)

Lovely, just lovely. It really makes me sick when I see how often MORONS are put in charge of animals at pet stores, etc. Just gross. One would hope that there would be a store employee there telling those people they were making a mistake. There certainly should have been someone there who could tell those fish were sick. Good for you Octo!

There used to be a little shop around here that dealt exclusively with birds and I shopped there a lot. The owner's 10 year old daughter knew EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know about parrots and how to care for them, but a lot of folks ignored her since she was "just a kid." Stupid.

I hate people too. Animals are better. Animal geeks - that's where you find the cool people. :hmm3grin2orange:

Unhappily, they probably did. Gotta make those sales you know! Doesn't matter if the fish are healthy or not. :cussing:

As i ve writen as my signature since i am on this web site:

-They are not JUST fish, they ARE fish-

You can also say -He is not JUST a kid, he IS a kid.

You are your own person , with your own intellect and your own habilities to learn an to discover.
You are unique in the world.

Someone younger can be super documented about one subject and know better then somebody older who has never shown any kind of interests in a certain field.

It even boothers me when my friend says...<< oh it doesnt matter, it s just a dog after all...>> First its MY dog, and i took the responsability of taking care of him and second, well, the dog can lives without me, he can breath, walk, eat... so he is his own person too.
We are just together so we can improve each others lives...he is not JUST A DOG that is for sure!

If you were on my facebook peoples... you could of read in my quotes: <<F_-_, i hate people!>> and i do say that all the time because of annoying people like the ones you ve met at today... an Oscar in a 2 gallons... give us all a break !!!

Good move on the wallmart tank too by the way!:shappy:

PEACE

Well said VIP!!

Nothing is "JUST" anything - it's a LIFE! I HATE that attitude that an animal just isn't important. I barely even use the word "pet." I don't think of any of my critters as merely pets. They are so much more than that - even my "just" fish!!

And, for the record, I even count my daughter as one of my "critters." :hmm3grin2orange:

Octo, there is NOTHING wrong with speaking out when you feel strongly about something. You are entitled to your opinion. But what you did today was quite correct. I would caution you that you probably could have gotten in trouble with the store but at least you tried to help the fish.

ha yeah well o'well they dont need to make profit from false ads and misleading ps. it was their erasable marker so it wipes off i did nothing more then that. So they cant do a thing about it yeah Criminal law woopty do ha they could sue me for writing on the tank and have proof of me doing it but in the end they would get nothing because i didnt ruin anything.

As you grow older and more cynical (like me) you will eventually realize that hating people only stresses YOU out, but rarely if ever corrects the problem. Stupid people are ALWAYS going to be stupid no matter how much you try to help them.

Learning is like quitting smoking - you can only quit if you WANT to, and the same goes for learning.

I find that it's much easier on my stress level to pity the stupid, and hate the spiteful or arrogent. :hmm3grin2orange:

I agree with you, but I'm older than you, and as such it is my moral responsibility to pass on my wisdom to younger folks.

On the other hand - I would have went and bought a permanent marker first... :hmm3grin2orange:

I said I was OLDER - never said I was wiser.

Age doesn't matter nearly as much as common sense. People can lack that at any age but.....

You said you "interrupted them" and perhaps this was not appreciated? I will offer help in a store if someone appears to want it or if they miss the fact a fish has Ick. If they appear to not want help, then I leave them alone.

I go to management if I see sick fish. If management does nothing I email the cooperate office. I would never write on their tanks with marker!

If anyone tried to get me to buy a snail or a betta I would probably knock them down! lol

There's a fine line between offering help and interferring.

Sorry to hear about your problem. You are not alone.:22: :22:

I hate it when that happens, older folks not listening to younger people.
Really I get it a lot. To the point, I just say this. "Really it is true." "Children do learn from adults." "Train a child up in the way they should go" Lead by example" " NO WONDER THERE IS SO MANY DISRESPECTFUL INTOLERABLE YOUTH OUT THERE." That is what I tell half the people who give me hell because of age and experience, and ones who are really down right up them selves in breeds. [So you now any one in NZ south of Canterbury is classified as in breeds.]

One time I got told off for spending money by a old couple. All I bought was $3.90 triple scoop ice cream. They said I should not spend money and be at home, or in school or read a book.

So I told them off. '' I have finished 12 days of 10hr shifts.'' I have more than earned my money.'' I have paid for my rent, for two weeks.'' Fill my own car up.'' ''Have money saved.'' "Who are you to tell me what to do?''

Well they did not like that. So they asked what I did for a Job. I said "Assistant Farm Manager and Milk Harvester."

Wow he hit the roof. Saying "far to young to do that." You should be in school or doing something else."

By that time I had lost it. Hoped in my car drove off throwing my ice cream at their car.

After I yelled at them saying In breads.

Use to also get it when looking after stalls at expos. Dam man I got really mad at some people. It is like, because I am a kid, you can't do a thing. But be a kid.

My fish club dose it to me all the $%%%ing time. And it is such a pain. More so when it is over fish tanks, and what a good tank should look like. And they say theirs are great. Well full to the brim with fish. Algae every were. And waste all over the show.

While nothing like that in mine. Just normal 30% water change a week, and good stocking.

Yet they say "Ohh I have 30 years experience in fish keeping"

Use to have the same problem when I was a supervisor at a local restaurant.
I would be helping a customer with their seating choice of foods, and explain the recipes so they new what was in them. Next thing a older staff member would walk past and they would talk to the person, to make sure I knew what I was doing, and saying. So they were not wrong. Even though I had a Badge with Supervisor on it. No one would believe me. Till the staff and boss said no he is supervisor.

IMO though I do believe adults do need to take their time and listen to younger people. A lot can be learned from them.

Sorry for taking over your thread.:11:

I commend you for trying! I agree with Lady Hobbs and it is often in the delivery, as to how someone may react to advice given.

With regards to respect....it has to be earned, it's not a right! There are many children out there who disrespect and talk down to older people, just as much as there are older people doing the same to young people. If you show others respect regardless of their age, they will usually/hopefully show you respect back. Of course there will be people (regardless of age again) that just won't listen or act like complete morons no matter what is said or how it is said to them.

Probably not a good idea to deface someone else's property though....that is not showing respect no matter how well intentioned it was.

i hate when people say oh your just 14 im not listening to you. I agree that 75% of teenagers these days are pure drug taking idiots but im not one of them. i dont spend over 2000$ on fish stuff if I had no idea what I was talking about. Sometimes I try real hard to make it clear to some people that there are mature, goal set teenagers out there and that I am one of them.
It just sickens me when people dont take advice from me just because im 14.
I know this is kinda harsh but I like to get it ouit sometimes.
