We are new to salt water tanks, so this might be a dumb question. Our anemones are shrinking . What can be the problem?

Probably either water quality or lighting. What are all the parameters? (salinity, temp, pH, hardness, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, etc) What lighting do you have?

id say lighting. Anenomes need marine fluorescent or halogen lights. Regular fluorescents arent good enough.

Metal halide. Don't use halogens please lol.
I agree with reptileguy, anenomes are pretty tough to keep and not recommended for people new to saltwater tanks. Most likely a water parameter issue. They need to be fed too correct?

Oooops, yeah, metal halide, not halogen.
