the insides of my betta's mouth seem to be a little white? is this normal? or could it be some sort of fungi
also for the first time he 'spat' out pellets that he had eaten

Mouth fungus. Melafix and Pimafix both work as well as fungal medications. It will become mouth rot if not treated.
I agree with hobbs, treat according to your bottle. Make sure you have a airstone in the tank, because melafix and pimafix sometimes blocks off the air from the betta, so add a airstone.

You just have to remember that there is a learning curve with fish. They are living organisms and just about anything can happen (and if you stick around this forum you'll hear about ALL of it:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: ) Hang in there, things will get better. Just don't give up thumbs2:

We hear of lots of betta's dying on this forum. Their life span is only two years and no one knows how old they are when purchased. Another problem is that often they are kept in bowls and vases so have to go thru constant stress from cleaning and water changing. Much better to keep them in their own tank with a filter so they aren't subject to the toxins in bowls.
A few years back I was on another forum with the gal that had 100 of them all in 5 gallon tanks. Can you imagine!!

100 in 5 wt hell?
well my betta was in a community 16 gallon tank and he was happy ... i think. i bought him back in February so who knows... maybe he was old to begin with. and he never attacked another fish... just tried to scare them away but never laid a fin on another. good 'personality'
but im fairly sure i treated him right : )
