View Full Version : Stores all have the same stuff. (Just a little venting)

It seems like every store around here has the same basic community fish selection. Livebearers, Tetras, Danios, etc. You can't find anything different, especially when it comes to crustacians (Ghost shrimp is it!) and plants. Cherry shrimp and Moss Balls are simply unheard of. One store has a couple unusual finger long shrimp, but they want 13 bucks apeice for them! Wal-Mart has tiny Flourescent red Danios for 6 bucks each. Anything out of the ordinary is overpriced. Not to complain, but you think stores would want a little variety to draw in the mega-store customers. Privately owned pet shops around here seem to concentrate on Marine Aquaria and large predatory freshwater fish. I don't really want to mail order fish. So what's a guy to do? Nothing but complain apparently! :ezpi_wink1:

Same here. You can get a live bearer for a buck, but if you want a Cherry Shrimp, you have to pay $5 a piece. They get unique fish once in a while, but charge way too much for them.

Livebearers for a buck, jeez, a basic molly platty or gupy over here is AU$4.50+

Very nice guppies go for anything between 1.50 and 2.50 euros. I paid 2.50 each for some bee shrimp but later noticed a guy offring them 10 for 11 euros.

I'm lucky enough to live quite close to one of the oldest fish stores in the country and they have a very large selection. This is their selection and they always have about 90% of this in stock:

If you guys want cherry shrimp, the cheapest way to get them is from a fellow hobbyist with a planted tank. They tend to get overrun with them and will sell them for a buck each (6-7 bucks shipping though)

Now how on earth can you send shrimp by overnight?

You don't send them overnight. Kordon breather bag + a small ball of moss and heat/cold packs if neccesary works fine with priority mail. Heck a guy on another forum ships HUNDREDS of crystal red shrimp (which are not as hardy) from japan via EMS (like 4-5 days shipping) with virtually no deaths. Besides, most people who sell cherry red shrimp are very experienced when it comes to shipping them, so they almost always offer a guarantee that they will arrive live.

I might do that. Sounds cheap, plus you get moss :)

Only worth it if you order at least 5 though ;) Keep an eye out. They aren't always up and when they are, they get gobbled up pretty fast. Note they ship as babies, which acclimate much better, but you need to make sure you don't have anything that will eat them.
